It’s no secret that most core gamers look down upon free to play games. They see it as nothing but a money pit run by businessmen looking to make a quick profit instead of game creators looking to craft fun experiences. There are obviously exceptions, and the latest LittleBigPlanet looks to be one of them.

At Gamescom, Sony announced a new extension of the LittleBigPlanet franchise called the LittleBigPlanet Hub. It’s a free to play version of the hit game that brings together the content from the past two games alongside all the user created content.

Giving every player free access to the Create mode in LittleBigPlanet is a pretty big deal. It’s easily the most attractive feature of the title and giving it away for free will no doubt bring in new players. From there, Sony can sell levels and costumes to convert free players into paying customers.

Of course, those who own and play both LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet 2 may be wondering what LittleBigPlanet Hub has to offer them. Sony says that all of your content and purchases from those titles will be available to you in one place alongside the added community features only available in LittleBigPlanet Hub.

LittleBigPlanet Hub will be released sometime later this year on the PlayStation 3.
