Kylo Ren: Editors Explain Timing Of Creepy Mask Scene

  • Kylo Ren is a character long grappled with after first screenings of Star Wars: The Force Awakens all over the world took place.

Not quite as ruthless as his grandfather and not near as committed to the dark side, Kylo Ren poses sort of a complicated picture of evil.

The devotion that Kylo Ren holds for his grandfather, Darth Vader, clearly outweighs the perceived slight he experienced from his father, Han Solo.

That devotion is shown in a scene that shows Kylo Ren speaking to the infamous mask of his dead grandfather.

It is a moving and definitive scene in the movie as it gives perhaps the only hint that Kylo Ren is struggling with a calling from the light side.

This is hilarious, by the way, if you haven’t run across it. Emo Kylo Ren:

This scene, according to editors of the movie, was placed in that particular sequence for good reason.

On editor, Mary Jo Markey, explains the placement of the Kylo Ren and Vader mask scene, saying, “That originally came much earlier in the film. It was scripted to happen after Poe and Finn escape from the Star Destroyer, and Kylo Ren would be berate himself for having seen that Finn was a traitor on the battlefield and not have done anything about it.”

She continued, “But we realized the moment was wasted there. It wasn’t a big enough event and and it came too early in the film.”

She then added, “We moved it to later in the film and made it about his fear about his father’s coming to the planet and his feelings of being pulled toward the light. It had a greater resonance there and greater importance for Kylo Ren’s character.”

Interesting! It does sound like that Kylo Ren scene made a much bigger impact than it could have from its former spot.

What do you think about the relocation of that Kylo Ren/Vader mask scene? Just right or do you think they should have left it?
