Singer Katy Perry is speaking up about her latest and seemingly-vulnerable album Prism. Previously flowing through the rumor circuit was that one of the songs from the album, a song entitled “Unconditionally”, is about her on-and-off relationship with the infamous-for-being-difficult John Mayer.

In the song, Perry croons about loving someone in spite of insecurities, dirty laundry, cracked-out-looking appearances on TV, and foul behavior. Ok, well maybe the last two concepts from that list were duly added, but we are talking about John Mayer here. And everybody knows that when it comes to dating John Mayer, word has it that he’s not as easy as his music.

While folks are listening in and making their own endless judgements about the music, Perry herself has already spoken out about the album and gives insight into what fueled the making of the album and what Prism symbolizes for her: “I think what Prism is, is an evolution and a maturity. I think you can hear growth as a songwriter. I hope you can hear growth as a person,” stated Perry. “I am into different things. It is my most present album so far. I think I am living very consciously right now. I think I am very aware, more aware than I have ever been,” added Perry.

However, Ms. Perry did confirm that her song was inspired by her relationship with Mayer to Entertainment Weekly, saying “‘Unconditionally'” was influenced by my boyfriend…. It’s just a simple message about loving someone and accepting them and kind of driving at you don’t have to be so self-conscious. You don’t have to fear, because essentially, everybody has their stuff.” Perry also added, “Everybody has their things and you’re never going to be perfect, and accepting that and understanding that, especially in a relationship. It makes for a real, genuine kind of love.”
