Katy Perry is running into a few problems with her proposed purchase of a convent in California. When the songstress offered to buy the former nunnery, at least a few of the former occupants of the property were on board with the idea. After all the deal was better in some ways for them than the previous offer they had.
The offer that came in before Katy Perry made her offer was from a restauranteur. The purchase price was the same, but there was some variance in additional terms.
But something soured the deal, at least temporarily, for Katy Perry. There has been plenty of speculation that perhaps the nuns hopped online and saw who they were dealing with. Could that be the catch?
Katy Perry used to be a Christian singer, recording under her birth name, Katy Hudson. She has a tattoo on her wrist that reads “Jesus”. Her parents are devout Christian conservatives. What’s not to love, nuns?
But her Christian recording career never really went anywhere. Her “Jesus” tattoo has been joined by a lotus flower and a Sanskrit one that roughly translates to “Go With the Flow.” And her Christian parents are none too pleased with her life choices, including push-up bras, lesbian-lite lyrics, and Russell Brand.

None of which is really all that scandalous, when you look at it. Are the nuns really balking at selling to Katy Perry because of qualms about her morality? One of the nuns did Google “Katy Perry.”
“Well, I found Katy Perry and I found her videos and … if it’s all right to say, I wasn’t happy with any of it,” said Sister Rita, one of the nuns wanting to go with a different buyer.
Sister Rita watched Katy Perry doing her Superbowl half-time show, including her crane-lift flying segment.
“I thought, is that a way to make money?” said Sister Rita. “Maybe I could fly around. I could be the flying nun.”
But when the deal is examined more closely, the whole thing hinges on the same thing all deals end up hinging on:
“She’s a very nice person, but it’s not the better deal. This is about money – control of money,” Sister Rita admitted.
Turns out, the previous offer, although for the same purchase price, kicks in an extra $5.5 million for the long-term lease of a property for priests who currently use the convent to move to. Perry, on the other hand, offered to buy a property for the priests for $4.5 million.
As Sister Rita said, this is about the control of money. The archdiocese is backing Katy Perry in the dispute. They say the restauranteur’s deal is not strong because there is only $100,000 cash in the deal. The other $9.9 million from the restauranteur is contingent on getting to turn the property into a hotel, which the neighbors oppose.
“The archbishop has made a personal promise to care for the sisters. We want to make sure no one takes advantage of them,” a spokesperson for the archdiocese said.
“How they were persuaded to do this, I don’t know,” an attorney for he archdiocese said of the deal with the restauranteur. “Either the sisters were taken advantage of, or there’s more going on than I understand.”
Katy Perry’s offer is all cash, plus the $4.5 million additional property purchase.
