John Anthony Brooks’ Game-Winner Made Twitter Absolutely Explode

Sure, there are plenty of great reaction videos showing crazed U.S. soccer fans losing their collective mind in the 87th minute of Monday’s World Cup game against Ghana.

But I just love this simple timelapse of Twitter activity before and after Brooks’ game-winning goal, courtesy SBNation’s Michael Katz.

Late in the game, minutes after Ghana had equalized with a soul-crushing goal, 21-year-old rookie John Anthony Books made the goal of a lifetime, knocking a header into the back of the net off a beautifully-placed corner kick. The German-American defender had come in after halftime as a substitute for the injured Matt Besler.

And boom. With the game winding down and USMNT’s dreams of three opening round point seemingly shattered – GOOOOAALLLLLLL!!!

According to Twitter, the entire USA vs. Ghana match saw nearly five million total tweets during the telecast. And if you count the entire globe, Clint Dempsey’s opening-minute goal was the most-tweeted moment of the match. It barely beat out Brooks’ late goal by a few thousand tweets per minute.

But I just love the explosion after the Brooks goal.

Go USA.
