Jessica Alba’s company, Honest, which makes a non-toxic, eco-friendly sunscreen, is under fire after numerous customers complained of the sunscreen’s ineffectiveness.

Many a burnt and bitter customer tweeted to Jessica Alba‘s Honest company about their bad experiences with the SPF 30 sunscreen.

In an attempt to restore their “honest” name, Jessica Alba’s company scrambled to put out a statement on Sunday saying that they adhere to their mission of “providing safe and effective products,” but the company takes “all consumer feedback very seriously.”

The statement went on to say, “The number of complaints received on our own website about our Sunscreen Lotion constitute less than one half of one percent of all units actually sold at honest.com.”

However, reviews on Amazon, which are eternally more damning, tell a more sinister tale.

The reviews for Jessica Alba’s company’s sunscreen heavily rate the product at one star and are sometimes scathing.

One recent customer wrote, “This is hands down the worst sunscreen ever. I’ve tried dozens of different sunscreens and words can’t come close to describing how terrible this product compares even to the cheapest stuff you find at discount stores. First, the product applies like a layer of grease — imagine putting melted butter on your skin.”

The (former) customer continued, “Next, the grease doesn’t wash off, even with vigorous scrubbing and multiple hand washes. Last, and most importantly, the sun protection from this product is about as good as no sunscreen. I was in the sun for less than an hour and my whole family was burnt.”

Another customer wrote, “DOES NOT WORK. I’m furious that, like the other reviewers, we were basically basting ourselves to be burned to a crisp. Even my husband who never ever burns is lobster red. WORST product I’ve ever bought.”

The continued, “I’d rather have bought generic dollar store sunscreen and skipped frying my family. Thank God I used Water Babies on my 20-month-old son before leaving the house. That’s the only thing that saved him! DO NOT BUY THIS SUNSCREEN.”

And the reviews like that go on and on.

Have you tried Jessica Alba’s Honest company sunscreen? Do you think Honest is in trouble over this flap?
