Tim Lindholm never set out to shape one of computing’s most enduring platforms. Hired in 1994 by Sun Microsystems for a project on the brink of collapse, he found himself among a skeleton crew of engineers wondering if their work would survive the week. Yet that precarious start produced Java. And a last-minute code overhaul three days before its public debut kept the whole effort from unraveling in front of an audience.

The story surfaces in full color in a new documentary that premiered this month. Titled The Java Story, the film from Cult.Repo captures interviews with key figures including language creator James Gosling, current Oracle architects Mark Reinhold and Brian Goetz, and Lindholm himself. Released on YouTube on July 17, it has already drawn attention across developer communities, with viewers on X sharing links and calling it essential viewing for anyone who works with the JVM.

Lindholm, who served as the original maintainer of Java’s virtual machine, spoke candidly with The Register about the frantic fixes that nearly didn’t happen. “I was one of the last people hired before the whole thing fell apart,” he recalled. The team had been gutted after losing a major set-top box contract to rival Silicon Graphics. Only a dozen engineers remained to nurse along a language then called Oak.

They pivoted to the web almost by accident. One engineer experimented with the Mosaic browser and proposed adapting Oak for online animations. The prototype, dubbed WebRunner, showed promise. Oak became Java in early 1995, named after the team’s coffee habit. Adoption exploded faster than anyone anticipated. “It took off like a friggin’ rocket. It was just crazy. We were all stressed,” Lindholm told The Register.

But the runtime refused to behave. Sun planned to unveil the technology at its 1995 SunWorld conference, the forerunner to JavaOne. Crashes kept occurring. Lindholm and fellow engineer Frank Yellin, a Lisp expert, had been tasked with turning Gosling’s rough concepts into production code. Threading proved especially troublesome. No standard libraries existed for it at the time. The pair had to build everything from scratch.

After days of debugging, Lindholm isolated the flaw. Interrupts on the SPARC processor could fire in the middle of an instruction. The system would lose critical state from memory. Recovery became impossible. “It was totally screwed up,” he said. The threading model was fundamentally broken. A complete rewrite loomed. With the conference just days away, Lindholm tore out the threads package and rebuilt it so interrupts occurred only at safe points.

The fix held. When Sun CEO Scott McNealy demonstrated Java on stage, Lindholm sat in the audience braced for disaster. Nothing broke. The language lived to fight another day. That single intervention, completed under extreme pressure, preserved a technology now ranked near the top of the TIOBE index and embedded in countless enterprise systems.

The documentary doesn’t stop at the early chaos. It traces Java’s battles with Microsoft, which licensed the language for Windows but introduced incompatible extensions through its J++ effort. Sun sued, alleging the changes fractured cross-platform compatibility. The litigation dragged on for years. Lindholm spent days giving depositions. “It was personal for us,” he said. Microsoft eventually paid Sun close to $2 billion in settlements.

Those legal fights drained resources. Development slowed while the team defended the platform’s integrity. Yet Java found its footing in server-side applications. Applets never dominated the browser as hoped. Technologies like JavaScript and ColdFusion took that space. The real impact came in backend systems, where Java’s performance and reliability won over large organizations.

Sun’s own fortunes shifted dramatically. The company once dominated with SPARC workstations. Commodity Linux servers eroded that lead. Java, however, continued to grow. The team expanded so much it occupied Sun’s headquarters and later moved into the former Apple campus. Lindholm watched the environment turn corporate. By the early 2000s he left for Google, where he stayed until retiring earlier this year.

Oracle acquired Sun in 2010. The transition brought new tensions. Many developers worried about the future of an open language under a company known for aggressive licensing. Yet the platform adapted. The release of OpenJDK accelerated community contributions. Modern Java has shed much of the complexity that plagued J2EE. Frameworks like Spring provided lighter alternatives that kept developers engaged.

Recent developments show the platform’s continued momentum. At JavaOne 2026, Oracle announced the release of Java 26, which delivers thousands of improvements aimed at developer productivity along with enhancements to performance, stability and security, according to the company’s event page. The update forms part of a broader Oracle Java Verified Portfolio that now includes stronger support for JavaFX and Helidon.

Security remains an ongoing focus. Oracle’s Critical Patch Update for April 2026 addressed multiple vulnerabilities in Java SE, including CVE-2026-34268, an information disclosure issue that could allow unauthorized data access. Vendors such as SentinelOne, F5, IBM and Red Hat issued guidance urging immediate upgrades. These patches reflect the reality that a language powering so much infrastructure attracts constant scrutiny.

The documentary arrives at a moment when Java’s relevance faces fresh questions. Cloud-native runtimes, newer languages and container orchestration have shifted how teams build applications. Still, billions of lines of Java code continue to run in production. The JVM underpins Kotlin, Scala and other languages. Its garbage collection, threading model and bytecode format have been refined across decades.

Lindholm views his early contributions with a sense of surprise. “It was kind of a random thing. You can never tell what parts of your life will end up being really significant for whatever reason,” he told The Register. Gosling struck a similar note in the film. “What excites me most about the future is the unknown. Lots of things happen, and mostly the interesting ones are the ones you could never predict.”

That unpredictability defined Java’s birth. A failed set-top box project. A winter that drove a mathematician into programming. A threading bug discovered at the last possible minute. The documentary captures these moments without romanticizing them. The engineers were not visionaries with perfect foresight. They were builders solving immediate problems under tight deadlines.

Yet those solutions proved durable. The JVM specification that Lindholm and Yellin co-authored still guides implementations today. The threading fixes established patterns that later informed concurrent programming libraries. Java’s write-once-run-anywhere promise, though imperfect, influenced how subsequent platforms approached portability.

Developers who watched the film this week on X described it as both nostalgic and instructive. One called it a “fabulous watch for someone who loves the JVM.” Others simply posted the YouTube link with little commentary, letting the story speak for itself. The timing aligns with JavaOne buzz around Java 26 and renewed attention on platform security.

Not every technology survives its origin story. Many promising languages from the 1990s faded. Java endured because a small group refused to let it fail. They rewrote code on short notice. They defended it in court. They adapted it to shifting hardware and business needs. The result stands as one of software engineering’s longest-running successes.

And the near-catastrophe at SunWorld in 1995? It became just another chapter. One that almost ended with a crash on stage. Instead it launched a platform that refuses to fade. Three days of intense work bought decades of impact. That’s a trade any engineer can appreciate.
