It Looks Like John McAfee Is Getting Released

The public has watched this whole saga unfold, strangely, even as McAfee was in hiding, but after being detained in Guatemala, and being granted a stay as the country hoped to expel him back to Belize where he is wanted by authorities in connection with the murder of his neighbor, McAfee is apparently set to be released. It also looks like he might get his wish, which is to return to his native United States.

A post on McAfee’s blog from Harold M. says:

A Guatemalan judge has just ruled that Mr. McAfee was detained illegally. He will be released from detention at the central imigration centerin Guatemala City tomorrow morning. It is believed he will be allowed to return to the United States.

Good News.

Update: This just showed up on the blog (also from Harold M.):

John will be released from detention at 9:00 A.M., Guatemala Time, from the Immigration detention center in Guatemals City. He has not divulged his plans.

The LA Times spoke with McAfee’s lawyer, who said he expects McAfee to be released by Thursday or Friday, and believes he will seek to return to the U.S. immediately:

Guerra said that according to Guatemalan law, someone entering illegally has the right to 10 days to establish immigration status. “There is no crime in coming without any visa. If there’s not any crime, the immigration office has to release him.”

McAfee has maintained that he is innocent of the murder, but believes if captured by the Belize government, which he claims is corrupt, he may be tortured or killed.

Here, you can watch a couple of videos McAfee recorded over the weekend defending himself and answering questions from the press.
