Rumor has it that the next version of the iPhone, which may or may not be called the iPhone 5 (but for all intents and purposes, we’ll refer to as the iPhone 5), will come with a smaller dock connector, rendering it incompatible with many existing iPhone accessories.

This news comes not from some random Apple blog, but from Reuters, who cites “two sources familiar with the matter”. These sources reportedly indicate that the iPhone 5 will feature a 19-pin connector port, as opposed to the 30-pin model that Apple has used for years.

As Reuters implies, this could mean big sales for accessory makers, even if it pisses off a lot of current iPhone users, who wish to upgrade when the device becomes available.

The iPhone 5 is said to be currently in the manufacturing stage, and it’s expected to be launched in either September or October (the Reuters report says October).
