Apple announced that it has sold over 1.7 million iPhone 4s, as of Saturday, June 26th. It only launched on June 24th.
"This is the most successful product launch in Apple’s history," said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. "Even so, we apologize to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply."
On Friday, analysts had estimated sales of about 1.5 million for the first day, with 77% of them coming from upgrades, according to one Piper Jaffray analyst.
The iPhone 4 has not launched without plenty of complaints, as discussed here, but the biggest draw seems to be the FaceTime feature, which enables users to connect with one another via video messaging.
Silicon Alley Insider reports that there are already sex chat services based on FaceTime coming out. Given porn’s track record for driving technology, FaceTime may prove to be quite popular.
The iPhone 4 is selling for $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32 GB model.
