Instagram Launches Profiles For The Web

Instagram announced today that it will be rolling out profiles on the web over the next few days. The feature is long overdue, and seemed like only a matter of time. We’ve seen signs that it was coming.

“Your web profile features a selection of your recently shared photographs just above your profile photo and bio, giving others a snapshot of the photos you share on Instagram,” the company says in a blog post. “In addition, you can follow users, comment & like photos and edit your profile easily and directly from the web. It’s a beautiful new way to share your Instagram photos!”

You can access your profile or those of friends by going to instagram.com/username. If you don’t see it yet, you should within the next few days.

From the profile, you can share the profile itself, or of course any of your photos. The profiles should go a long way in increasing usability of the service. Profile discovery, for one, should be easier.

If photos are set to public, anyone (including non-users) will be able to see your profile. If your photos are set to private, you’ll still have a profile, but not everyone will be able to see the photos. They’ll only be visible to those you’ve allowed to follow you.

There will still not be an option to upload photos from the web. The company says it is focused on the production of photos from mobile devices. There’s always the revamped Imgur.

The launch is probably not good news for services like Webstagram, though for the time being, there will apparently still not be a news feed for Instagram on the web.

As you can see from the example image, the layout (at least the top of it) has a very Facebook Timeline-like feel.
