Niche competitors like Render, Railway, and Fly.io have captured the hearts of the indie developer and startup communities that Heroku once owned. Vercel has become the default deployment platform for Next.js applications, one of the most popular web frameworks in the world. Each of these competitors has been building community and refining their products during the years when Heroku was dormant.

Heroku’s leadership appears to understand the magnitude of the challenge. The blog post strikes a tone that is simultaneously confident and humble, acknowledging past shortcomings while making the case that the platform’s best days are ahead.
