Defense Distributed made a lot of lawmakers very nervous – and Second Amendment defenders very happy – earlier this year when it revealed The Liberator. The single shot handgun was the first gun to be made entirely by a 3D printer. Now another designer has kicked it up a notch.
Say hello to The Grizzly – the world’s first fully 3D printed rifle. The gun, designed by ThreeD Ukelele, says it’s a single shot .22LR. It borrows the mainsprings from The Liberator, and just like the aforementioned handgun, the only metal in The Grizzly is a roofing nail.
As you can see, The Grizzly has to be fired via a string. The gun itself breaks upon firing so you obviously don’t want to be holding it. Still, it’s a major accomplishment in the realm of 3D printed firearms, and it’s only going to get better. The designer says that more work will be done in the future so they may be able to work out any kinks in future iterations.
If you want more information about The Grizzly and how it was made, check out its thread over at the DEFCAD forums. The creator is posting constant updates about the gun, including pictures of before and after the rifle was fired. It’s incredibly fascinating.
