  • Haylie Duff spoke recently about her engagement to Matt Rosenberg, and the actress said that even though it wasn’t big and flashy, it was still a surprise.

Duff–whose sister is actress/singer Hilary Duff–said she was getting ready to make dinner, asking what Rosenberg wanted, when she realized he was being awfully quiet.

“I was making dinner and it was just sort of like a normal night… I was literally like, my face in the refrigerator, like, ‘What do you want for dinner? Do you want chicken? Do you want this?’ and he wasn’t responding to me. I turned around and he was [holding a ring],” she said.

Unfortunately for Rosenberg, he chose the one day a year when a marriage proposal might not be taken too seriously.

“It happened on April Fool’s Day, so instantly I was sweaty and crying and I thought it was an April Fool’s joke. I was like, ‘This is the meanest April Fool’s joke you could ever possibly do!’ But I couldn’t have imagined it any sweeter and it was exactly how I would’ve wanted it to happen,” Duff said.

Duff says that she hasn’t had much time to start wedding planning due to her busy schedule; her new show, Real Girl’s Kitchen, premieres on Saturday on the Cooking Channel, so she’s been working hard to prepare. Duff describes herself as a “self-taught” cook, which prompted the name of the show.

“When I came up with the title, it was sort of like the thing where I’m not a professionally trained chef – I’m a self-taught cook. I’ve learned by trial and error,” she said.
