Last year was rough for Stefani after her marriage to Gavin Rossdale fell apart. Reports alleged that the Bush frontman had an affair with their nanny. However, late last year, she also met her current beau Blake Shelton, on the set of The Voice and revealed they were dating in November.

Stefani draws in raw emotions in her “most personal f—king album,” writing songs about betrayal, heartbreak, and moving on.
In an interview with refinery29.com, Gwen Stefani opened up about the “right time” she put her feelings into words: “I just felt at a certain point in my own heart, when everything was crushed and I was down real, real low, I was like, I don’t want to be down here. This is not me. I remember feeling embarrassed. Like, I gotta prove that this is not going to be who I am. I gotta turn this into music.”
“Used to Love You” is a single released months after she filed for divorce, and it reveals the pain and disappointment she felt after a failed relationship.

Explaining what prompted her to write “Make Me Like You,” Gwen Stefani shares, “I think that when you go through what I went through, or what I’m still going through, you think you’re hopeless. You don’t know what’s going to happen. You panic.”

“It was a really super-unexpected gift to find a friend, somebody who happened to be going through the exact same thing as me, literally mirroring my experience,” she said referring to her new relationship with Shelton. She also admitted that her current relationship influenced her current album.
