A Toronto man has been fired from his job after York Regional Police retweeted his request for someone to bring him some pot at work.

The tweet, from (former) Mr. Lube employee Sunith Baheerathan, asked for “any dealers in Vaughan wanna make a 20sac chop? Come to…Mr Lube, need a spliff.” Some amazing social media manager for the York police retweeted Baheerathan’s tweet, with the added line “Awesome! Can we come too?”

Their tweet received over 5,000 retweets and 3,500 favorites.

The most likely unwanted publicity from the tweet landed Baheerathan in hot water with his employer, Mr. Lube, who promptly fired him.

“People really think I’m serious with my tweets? MANNNNNNNN,” he tweeted. “Can’t lie, stupid move but would y’all have noticed that tweet if YRP didn’t retweet it?”

It appears that Sunith Baheerathan’s Twitter account has been modified, or at least repurposed since the incident. It no longer features any of the tweets from above. He appears to have changed the handle on his account, which is now protected.

“DISCLAIMER: My tweets are NOT serious by any means,” reads his bio.

Sure, it may have just been a joke. But joking or not, it’s probably not a good idea to solicit drugs on Twitter. It’s kind of hard to read the joke between the lines in just 140 characters. And when the local police department is keen on social media, well, this is what happens.
