Yesterday, the internet community became aware of a video and press release that claimed to be straight from hacktivist group Anonymous. The release outlined their new operation, #OpFacebook, which plans to taken down Facebook once and for all on November 5th, Guy Fawkes Day.
The release explained that Anonymous is going after Facebook because of privacy issues. The release claimed that Anonymous wants to destroy Facebook’s ability to “sell information to government agencies” and their practice of “giving clandestine access to information security firms.”
In our article about #OpFacebook, we mentioned a tweet by well known Anonymous Twitter account @GroupAnon that stated “FYI – #OpFacebook is being organised by some Anons. This does not necessarily mean that all of #anonymous agrees with it.”
And since then, more tweets have come in from various well-known Anonymous Twitter accounts that call into question the legitimacy of #OpFacebook.
First, tweets from #AnonOps hint that some members of Anonymous aren’t thrilled about #OpFacebook – either that or #OpFacebook is a hoax that doesn’t exist at all –
#OpFacebook is just ANOTHER FAKE! WE DONT “KILL” THE MESSENGER. THAT’S NOT OUR STYLE #Anonymous
TO PRESS: MEDIAS OF THE WORLD… STOP LYING!#OpFacebook. Lets keep our style & moral #Anonymous
Dont be silly. Important things are happening in the world to deal with quirks like#OpFacebook is being organised by some Anons. This does not necessarily mean that all of #Anonymous agrees with it.
There was more from @GroupAnon, including this Tweet that they retweeted –
@anonops and @anonyOpsIndo for exposing the fact that #opFacebook is bullshit and does not exist.
Thank you to my brothers atFinally, @Anon_Central tweeted this –

Trollface, indeed.
Who knows, maybe this whole #OpFacebook thing is the brainchild of Myspace. Justin Timberlake sure can be crafty.
