Oceans warm. Great white sharks feel it first in their cores. These mesothermic marvels—less than 0.1% of marine life—retain metabolic heat to outpace prey, strike harder, roam farther. But that edge flips to peril as global temperatures climb. A one-ton shark hits its limit above 62.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Overheat looms. Habitats shrink. Food fights intensify.

Researchers tracked it with pinpoint sensors. Tiny devices on basking sharks topping three tons revealed hidden heat budgets: production versus loss in real time. Mesotherms burn nearly four times the energy of cold-blooded kin at matching sizes and temperatures, according to a Science study led by Nicholas Payne of Trinity College Dublin. “The results were really quite striking—after accounting for body size and temperature, we found that mesothermic fishes use about 3.8 times more energy than similarly sized ‘ectothermic’, or ‘cold-blooded’ fishes,” Payne said. A 10°C rise more than doubles routine metabolic rate. Sharks can’t shop for calories. They hunt or starve.

And hunt they must, harder. Larger bodies generate heat faster than they shed it—simple physics of volume outpacing surface area. Bluefin tuna tweak blood flow or plunge deep temporarily. Great whites? They slow, redirect circulation, seek chillier depths. Summer squeezes worst: hotter shallows, crowded prey. Apex control slips. Lower chains rebound unchecked, from seals to small sharks.

South Africa’s False Bay tells the story. Once a great white hotspot—250 to 300 sightings yearly—now near zero. Thermal flight plays a role, but overfishing, nets, habitat loss hit harder. “The loss of this iconic apex predator has led to an increase in sightings of Cape fur seals and sevengill sharks, which in turn has coincided with a decline in the species that they rely on for food,” said Neil Hammerschlag of the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School, per Oceanographic Magazine. Seals surge. Fish vanish. Sevengills thrive on juveniles. Cascades ripple.

Payne calls it double jeopardy: heat plus vanishing forage, depleted by bycatch in vast nets and lines. “If we had to say what is the one thing that we need to urgently address for these animals, it’s the fishing problem. The most acute, urgent crisis these animals face is from overfishing, and particularly now from bycatch,” he told Inside Climate News. History echoes the risk. Megalodon fossils—extinct giants—cluster in cooler eras. Past warm spells starved their voracious furnaces.

Shifts spread global. Juveniles push north off California, chasing tolerable chill amid El Niño heat waves and marine heat domes. Monterey Bay sees unusual surges, Monterey Bay Aquarium research shows, though exact tagging data ties to broader patterns of warming-driven range expansion. Australia’s east coast warms too; young whites face winter habitat squeeze, says Adrienne Gooden of Southern Cross University in an ABC News report. “So it is likely that we will see a compression of habitat where they can’t move as far north, but they also are not getting increases in available habitat in that southern region.” Northeast U.S. and Canada log more time with great whites in chilly northern bites, AP News data confirms.

Sentinel status grows. Great whites flag ecosystem flux. Stephanie Nicolaides, University of the Western Cape marine researcher, notes the pivot: “Many local and international conservation narratives now position the great white not as a villain, but as a keystone species essential to maintaining ocean health.” Edward Snelling, University of Pretoria physiologist and study coauthor, adds gravity: “These species are being pushed closer to their physiological limits, which could have consequences for where they can live and how they survive. These animals are already operating on a tight energy budget, and climate change is narrowing their options even further.”

But fishing trumps heat—for now. Bycatch claims incidentally. Eco-tourism falters without stars. Protection zones demand heat maps from those sensors. Payne sounds the tocsin: “Today’s oceans are changing at unprecedented speeds. The alarm bells are ringing loudly at this point.” Mesotherms like threshers, porbeagles join the fray. Tuna too. Rare power meets common threat.

Climate drives. Humans amplify. Sharks flee south in Gulf streams, linger north in Maine shallows, compress along coasts. False Bay’s void warns: lose the regulator, watch the web warp. Sensors unlock secrets. But action lags. Overfished stocks dwindle. Warm waters encroach. Great whites adapt—or don’t. Their fire dims.
