Google has already saved people a total of two years per day, and a whole lot of fuel, thanks to that traffic-based re-routing feature the company launched earlier this week. That is according to Google’s Marissa Mayer, who spoke today at SXSW Interactive.
She also shared some other interesting stats. For example, there are over 150 million people using Google Maps for Mobile. 40% of all Google Maps use comes from mobile devices.
Over 35 million miles are driven per day (12 billion a year) using Google Maps Navigation. There are 3 million ratings on Hotpot.
Google has over 12 people speaking at SXSW this year. The company is also doing check-in offers during the event with 60 businesses in Austin, via its location-based service, Google Latitude.
You can probably look at this as a sign of things to come. Much of what Mayer had to say regards the fusion of the physical world with the online, mobile world – much of what the location-based services industry is all about. The company has been putting an increased emphasis on mobile (beyond just Android). CEO (for a little while longer anyway) Eric Schmidt made note of this the same day he announced his position change. Mobile is where it’s at, and you better believe Google plans on being at the forefront of future innovation there.
