Google Fiber TV Is Still The Best Deal Around (In Kansas City)

During the initial Google Fiber announcement, the most exciting prospect was Google Fiber TV. Not just for the absolute insane HD quality that you’ll get through fiber, but the price as well. For only $120 a month, subscribers will get a router, a 2TB DVR, a Wi-Fi enabled set top box and a Nexus 7 tablet. Your $120 pays for 185 channels, but the company has so far remained silent on premium channels and pricing.

Google announced today that they have entered into an agreement to offer Showtime and Starz to subscribers. Unfortunately, there is HBO, but that might come later. For now, subscribers can tack an additional 17 Starz channels and 11 Showtime channels for only $10 a piece. That’s an incredible value considering how much TV alongside premium channels go for these days.

For their Spanish speaking customers, Google also announced that they will be offering some of the most popular Hispanic channels for only $5 a month. Those channels are Univision tlnovelas, FOROTv, Telehit, Bandamax, Ritomoson Latino, De Película and De Película Clásico.

Here’s the full breakdown of all the channels you’ll get with both Showtime and Starz on Google Fiber TV:

Starz ($10/month for Gigabit + TV customers): Starz, Starz Cinema, Starz Comedy, Starz Edge, Starz in Black, Starz Kids and Family, Encore, Encore Action, Encore Español, Encore Family, Encore Love, Encore Drama, Encore Suspense, Encore Westerns, IndiePlex, MoviePlex, RetroPlex

Showtime ($10/month for Gigabit + TV customers): Showtime, Sho2, Sho Beyond, Showtime Extreme, Showtime Family Zone, Sho Next, Showtime Showcase, Sho Women, Flix, The Movie Channel, The Movie Channel Xtra

Once again, it’s a shame that HBO is not included with the launch of Google Fiber TV. The omission can be chalked up to the channel being owned by Time Warner. None of Time Warner’s channels will be available on Google Fiber TV for obvious reasons. It seems that Time Warner is going to use HBO as a bargaining chip to keep people subscribed to their more expensive broadband and TV package.

Google Fiber is still in the planning stage with neighborhoods competing to see who will get it first. From there, Google will start installing Fiber in homes starting next month. At that point, it will be interesting to see if Time Warner will change its tune once they start losing customers to Google.
