Last week, news came out that Feedly had become self-reliant, as in no longer relying on Google Reader to function. The following message appeared on the app page in the App Store:

“Now powered by the feedly cloud. Let’s all wish a happy retirement to Google Reader.”

Now, Feedly has started showing a link at the top of its desktop reader to an “important” message to users about being prepared to be upgraded to the Feedly Cloud. They say they’re in the process of finalizing the migration from the Google Reader backend to its own new backend, and it’s important that users run version 16 of Feedly on all devices.

iOS and Android users are advised to make sure they have the latest update, and to un-install and re-install if they’re not sure.

“Over the next 2-3 days you should expect to receive a green banner message (desktop) or a green card (mobile),” says Feedly. “This is the notification that your feeds and categories and up to 1,000 starred items have been successfully migrated to the feedly cloud and the articles you are seeing are coming from the feedly service.”

Users need to restart the app on all other devices so they connect to the Feedly Cloud.

Feedly is not migrating user history data, because there is simply too much of it, so users should expect that unread counts will be reset.

“In some cases, there might be a gap of a few days in the saved items because migrating a few million accounts takes a few days,” says Feedly. “We have done our best to minimize that gap but we apologize if you are missing a few saved items.”

Both of these minor issues are one-time issues, Feedly says.

Feedly will continue to use Google authentication for logging in, but plans to add Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and LinkedIn as well.

All users are expected to be migrated by June 21st.
