Fairphone 3 Bows Out After Seven Years: Official Android Support Ends, But Lifeline Emerges

Fairphone’s first big push into modular, ethical smartphones hit a milestone this week. The Fairphone 3, launched in August 2019, wraps up its official Android support in August 2026. That’s seven years of updates—two more than promised at launch. Users won’t face a dead end, though. A partnership with Murena keeps the device alive via the privacy-focused /e/OS.

Back then, Fairphone aimed for five years of software backing. They stretched it. Android 9 at debut. Upgrades to 10, 11, 13. Skipped 12 and 14 due to the old Linux kernel 4.9, which couldn’t handle newer demands. The latest build, 6.A.040.2 from March 16, 2026, packs a February security patch and eases bootloader unlocking. Check Fairphone’s release notes for the full changelog.

Security patches roll bi-monthly now. Last one drops in June 2026. Then, silence from Fairphone’s Android team. Hardware repairs? Still available. Spare parts stocked for years. But software—that’s where Murena steps in.

Enter /e/OS: Two Extra Years of Security and Privacy

Murena, makers of /e/OS, pledged updates through 2028. That’s de-Googled Android with tracker blocking, app lounge for privacy-safe downloads, and advanced controls. They’re bumping it to Android 15 base for better compatibility. No charge to switch. Guides at Murena’s site. /e/OS announced this on X: “Even as Android support ends for Fairphone 3 after 7 years, we will keep it running securely with /e/OS for two more years—no need to replace your device.” CEO Gael Duval told Telecompaper, the extension ensures “longevity as well as privacy.”

Android Authority broke the news first, noting Fairphone’s retirement post: “the Fairphone 3 will be officially retired in August this year.” See their full report here. Fairphone’s support page confirms: “Official support for the Fairphone 3(+) will end in August 2026.” (Fairphone Support).

Why stop at seven? Hardware limits. That kernel blocks Android 14. Fairphone pushed A13 maintenance into 2026, beating Android 13’s standard 2025 end. Users on forums gripe about rollout delays—some stuck on older patches like 6.A.031.7. But most get updates via Settings > System > System update.

And the fingerprint snag. Android 13 downgraded it from Class 3 to Class 2 biometrics. Banking apps balked. Fairphone warned users post-rollout. Custom ROMs dodge this by ignoring Google’s rules.

Fairphone didn’t rest on this model. Fairphone 4 gets support to 2026, maybe 2028. Fairphone 5? Eight years minimum, to 2031. Gen 6 launched with Android 15, updatable to 16 already. All emphasize modularity—swap batteries, cameras, screens yourself.

Sustainability’s Real Test: Beyond Software

Software’s half the battle. Fairphone shines in repairs. Fairphone 2 got eight years before fading. EU rules now demand five years of OS updates, but Fairphone beat that trend. Competitors like Samsung hit five years security; Google Pixels match. Fairphone 3 outlasts them.

Owners face choices now. Stick with A13 till August. Flash /e/OS for privacy gains. Or recycle via Fairphone’s program. e/OS on Reddit buzzes with fans extending life further. One thread: “e/OS extends the life of Fairphone 3 for 2 more years.” (r/fairphone).

Industry watchers praise the move. Ars Technica in 2023 called it “besting every other Android OEM.” Today, with Murena’s help, it pushes further. Phones as disposable? Not here. Fairphone proves longevity pays—for users, planet, bottom line.
