Facebook Announces Anonymous Login, More Data Control For Regular Login [f8]

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg just took the stage at the company’s f8 conference, and announced Anonymous Login and some updates to the old Facebook login experience that gives users more options about the data they share with developers.

Anonymous Login lets you try apps without sharing any personal info. Even better (for users at least), is that it syncs across devices using an anonymous identifier.

Zuck described it as a “hassle free way to log in and try app,” and a way to “try apps without fear.”

“Anonymous Login lets people log in to apps so they don’t have to remember usernames and passwords, but it doesn’t share personal information from Facebook,” the company says. “People can decide later if they want to share any additional information, once they understand more about the app.”

Right now, Facebook is testing the feature with a few developers, but will open it up to all in the coming months.

Zuck also talked about some changes they’re making to regular login. You’ll now be able to select (or deselect) specific types of data you want to share with the app. If you don’t want to share your email address, for example, you can uncheck it.

Facebook also has a new app control panel design so people can better keep track of their Facebook-connected apps. It shows which ones you’re logged into, and which ones you’re logged into anonymously.

These moves should help Facebook recover from its slump in share of social logins.
