Eva Green helped make Penny Dreadful a rousing success for Showtime last year, and the second season will see more dark matter, more bloodshed, and more drama as a “proper villain” makes trouble for her character.
Warning: this article may contain spoilers.
Green, Josh Hartnett, and Timothy Dalton all star in the season two trailer, which has been making its way around the web this week as fans anticipate the series return on April 26. Helen McCrory, who plays dark witch Evelyn Poole, also makes a comeback, and according to show creator John Logan, she’ll wreak some havoc.
“This season she becomes the antagonist for not only Vanessa, but for all the characters Now we have a proper villain, and we enjoy her immensely,” Logan told reporters at the Television Critics Association press event this week. “We sort of unleash hell in this season. It’s our make or break season.”
While Eva Green and her co-stars made their fair share of mayhem during the first season, Logan says this time around things will be a bit different as they’ll be on the run.
“Last season, our heroes were hunters. This season, they’re hunted,” Logan says.
Fans of the show will know that Eva’s character, Vanessa, questioned what she wanted last season even after Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) sacrificed his own daughter to save her, and according to TV Guide, there will be some friction between the two characters this season. There will also be a strong witchcraft influence, as can be seen in the haunting trailer, and the show will delve more deeply into werewolves to explore Josh Hartnett’s character.
“You’ll definitely see more this season. He learns what he is. How we treat lycanthropy is a big part of the season,” Logan promised.
Green and the rest of her Penny Dreadful co-stars will return on April 26 at 10 p.m. on Showtime.
