Emma Stone worked hard to land the role of Sally Bowles in the Broadway production of Caberet–which she took over from Michelle Williams–so she’s not letting a little personal injury stand in the way of her enjoyment onstage.
The 26-year old actress told the L.A. Times recently that she swung her leather jacket off during a show and accidentally whacked herself in the eye with a buckle, but the incident came in the midst of one of several vibrant performances and Stone hasn’t let it mar her time on the stage.
“This year has been mind-boggling. Exciting and then … ‘Omigod!’ And yet, a year ago or two years ago, I remember sitting on the couch crying about something — not surprising, I cry all the time … projects that weren’t going to happen or projects someone else was chosen for. That perspective never goes away. This will be just another period in my life that will ebb and flow, and the ups and downs are so clear to me,” she said in the interview.
Stone has been a fan of the show since she was a kid, when her mother took her to see a performance starring Natasha Richardson. Since then, it’s been her dream role, and one she was actually offered several months before she was able to accept it. That time, she had to turn it down due to a hectic schedule.
“There was one day on the schedule where I would land from Tokyo in the morning and have enough time to make it to perform in that afternoon’s matinee. I realized that this schedule would turn the dream of playing Sally into a kind of nightmare. It felt like forcing something that wouldn’t fit. But I was telling myself I can do this, and everyone wanted to make it work, and it’s hard to say no when people are being so accommodating. But part of me also thought, ‘It’s going to kill me.’” she told the New York Times.
Despite that full schedule, she hasn’t slowed down; not only is she getting rave reviews for her turn as Sally Bowles, she’s also earning them in droves for her performance in Birdman, opposite Michael Keaton. In the film, she plays a somewhat troubled young woman at odds with her father, who never bothered to have much of a relationship with her. Keaton’s character is a former film superhero trying to make a comeback on Broadway.
