Eli Manning has always had a hard time escaping the shadow of his older brother Peyton, not only in the sports world but in general. While being interviewed via satellite before the Kentucky Derby yesterday, a reporter asked him how it felt to be hosting Saturday Night Live in the wake of his brother’s famously funny turn on the show; Manning replied in his usual manner, referring to his big bro in only the kindest of terms and saying he had big shoes to fill.
But the show proved to be an outlet of sorts for his frustration at repeatedly being compared to Peyton, and Eli got his digs in with good humor, such as the skit about the “Little Brothers” program, in which he (playing himself) helps kids in the city get back at their older brother tormentors.
Eli also dressed in drag for one skit, showing off some pretty good gams. But the highlights of the show were his willingness to make fun of himself, his brother, or his fellow NFL mates; not because it was done in a malicious way, but rather because it shows he doesn’t harbor any ill feelings about his place in the world of sports.
Fans took to Twitter to voice their opinions on his performance.
Eli Manning, you’re doing a good job on SNL. I’m really drunk. But you’re doing a good job.
I like how they planned to have Eli Manning host SNL on the one day everyone is drunk and thinks anything and everything is funny.
