Microsoft and Google may be rolling out AI in their search products, but a much more ambitious project wants to use it to help doctors.
DoctorGPT is an open source project that aims to use ChatGPT to help doctors find and diagnose errors. Per the project’s GitHub page:

DoctorGPT is a lightweight self-contained binary that monitors your application logs for problems and diagnoses them.
DoctorGPT will start tailing program.log (without stopping). Each user-defined trigger for a user-defined parser log line event will generate a diagnosis file under directory ~/errors. config.yaml file is used at startup to configure the program.
The project’s developer is quick to point out that the DoctorGPT is not production ready yet, but the writing is clearly on the wall in regard to the future of AI and medicine.
The development is no surprise, especially since ChatGPT passed the US medical exam as early as January 2023. Studies show ChatGPT has significant potential to aid in diagnosis, with a University of Maryland Medicine study showing it could detect breast cancer in 88% of cases.
Nonetheless, as NPR reports, experts are urging caution.
“I think it’s very exciting, but I’m also super skeptical and super cautious,” says Pearse Keane, a professor of artificial medical intelligence at University College London in the United Kingdom. “Anything that involves decision-making about a patient’s care is something that has to be treated with extreme caution for the time being.”
