The Dave Clark Five is highlighted in a TV special called The Dave Clark Five and Beyond: Glad All Over set to air on Tuesday night on PBS. The documentary shows viewers that the Beatles weren't the only band to come from the British invasion. The band, known for hits including Glad All Over, Catch Us If You Can, and Because was made up of Dave Clark along with Lenny Davidson, Mike Smith, Rick Huxley and Denis Payton. Only Clark and Davidson are alive.

The Beatles and The Dave Clark Five were cast as rivals many years back--a myth that Paul McCartney refutes.

"Paul McCartney talks about it in the documentary. There was no rivalry. We were mates," Dave Clark, who is now 71 years old, says.

The band--like The Beatles--made their American debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. In fact, Ed Sullivan introduced the band as the kind of young men "every American mother" would love.

"I thought, 'Well, that's blown our rock 'n' rock career straight away. But it didn't," Clark said.

The Dave Clark Five had a rock and roll sound not unlike the Beatles, but the bands themselves differed greatly. The Beatles featured three guitarists--Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and George Harrison, as well as drummer Ringo Starr. The Dave Clark Five featured a pianist and saxophonist in addition to guitarists and a drummer.

One of the greatest honors Dave Clark recalls came at the end of his career when Laurence Olivier recorded a holographic performance of the Dave Clark Five.

"One of the biggest inspirations of my life," Clark said of the famed British actor. "You'd think that somebody that big wouldn't want to work with a rock and roller from Tottenham. We had a great, great rapport."

Will you be tuning in to PBS on Tuesday night to watch The Dave Clark Five and Beyond: Glad All Over? It is sure to transport fans back to the 1960s and 1970. Check your local listings to see what time the documentary will air.
