FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Marquis Software Solutions Files Lawsuit Against SonicWall Alleging Cybersecurity Failures Enabled Ransomware Attack
Plano, Texas — February 23, 2026 — Marquis Software Solutions, Inc. (“Marquis”), a leading provider of compliance and digital marketing software for financial institutions, today announced it has filed a lawsuit against SonicWall Inc., alleging that SonicWall’s cybersecurity failures exposed sensitive firewall configuration data that enabled a ransomware attack against Marquis and caused significant reputational, operational, and financial harm.
The complaint, filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, alleges that SonicWall failed to adequately secure its cloud backup service, allowing unauthorized access to firewall configuration files and authentication credentials to the SonicWall firewall used by Marquis to protect its network. According to the complaint, this exposed critical security infrastructure and enabled threat actors to bypass Marquis’ defenses and gain unauthorized access to its systems.
Public reporting confirms that SonicWall suffered a breach of its MySonicWall cloud backup that exposed customers’ firewall configuration files, including encrypted credentials and detailed network information that could make it easier for attackers to exploit firewall defenses. SonicWall acknowledged that threat actors accessed backup firewall configuration files through attacks on its cloud infrastructure, exposing information that cybersecurity experts described as providing attackers with a potential “roadmap” to exploit network defenses more efficiently.
According to the lawsuit, SonicWall was aware that its cloud backup service had been compromised, putting Marquis’ network data at risk. Not only did SonicWall fail to disclose its compromise promptly, but the company assured Marquis that its firewall protection was not affected for a period of several weeks.
Due to SonicWall’s failure to protect against the vulnerability in its cloud backup, Marquis’ network was exposed to threat actors who gained unauthorized access to certain client data. And, because SonicWall failed to timely disclose the full scope and severity of its breach, Marquis was prevented from mitigating the harm that resulted from the SonicWall breach.
“Marquis invested significant resources to protect its clients and their data with SonicWall’s firewall solutions, only to be exposed as a result of a breach of SonicWall’s network that put Marquis and other customers’ networks at risk,” said Satin Mirchandani, CEO of Marquis Software Solutions.
“While we were able to secure our network and client data quickly, our investigation revealed that our exposure to threat actors was due to SonicWall’s network breach and failure to notify us that our firewall protection was potentially compromised,” said Mirchandani. “This gross negligence on the part of SonicWall required Marquis to bear substantial costs to secure our data and protect our customers, which we are seeking to recover.”
Marquis detected the unauthorized access in August 2025 and immediately activated its incident response protocols, secured its systems, and engaged leading cybersecurity specialists to investigate and remediate the attack. Marquis also worked closely with clients and law enforcement to address the incident and mitigate its impact.
The complaint states that SonicWall’s compromised cloud backup system exposed confidential firewall configuration files, including authentication credentials and network architecture details essential to maintaining cybersecurity defenses. Cybersecurity experts have warned that exposure of firewall configuration files can significantly increase the risk of cyberattacks by giving threat actors insight into network defenses and potential vulnerabilities.

Marquis is seeking damages, reimbursement for costs incurred in responding to the attack, and other legal remedies. The complaint alleges SonicWall’s conduct constitutes gross negligence, and failure to uphold fundamental cybersecurity obligations.

“This case is about accountability and protecting the broader ecosystem that depends on trusted cybersecurity providers,” Mirchandani said. “When security vendors fail to protect the very infrastructure designed to defend their customers, the consequences extend far beyond a single organization.”

Marquis continues to strengthen its cybersecurity safeguards and remains committed to protecting its clients and maintaining the highest standards of security and transparency.

The case is Marquis Software Solutions, Inc. v. SonicWall Inc., filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
