Colin Farrell may be a hunky Irish actor who leaves girls swooning, but he has a deeper side that not many people know about. The 37-year old actor spoke candidly recently about a relationship he had with a beautiful actress that wasn’t about anything physical, but rather about a connection and friendship.
Farrell told Ellen DeGeneres recently that he was at Cedars Sinai in 2009 for the birth of his son Henry when he met Elizabeth Taylor’s manager, Tim Mendelsohn. He didn’t have the chance to meet the iconic actress then, because she was ill and was having heart surgery, but he asked Mendelsohn to give her his best. Soon after, he decided to send flowers, only to receive some from Taylor herself. A week after that, the two arranged a meeting.
“And that was the beginning of a year and a half or two years of what was a really cool [relationship]. It was kind of like the last — it feels like in my head, not hers, I’m projecting — but the last kind of romantic relationship I had. It was really cool, and she wasn’t much of a sleeper at night, like I’m not, so at two o’clock in the morning, I’d call her. I’d call her at two in the morning, and the nurse would answer the phone, and I’d say, ‘Is she awake?’… And then I’d be on the phone and I’d hear, ‘Hello?’ And I’d go, ‘How’s it going?’ And we’d talk for a half an hour, an hour, into the wee hours. I just adored her. She was a spectacular, spectacular woman. I wanted to be [husband] number eight, but we ran out of road.”
Sadly, Taylor died in 2011 at the age of 79. After getting her start in Hollywood as a child, she went on to portray some of the most memorable characters on film and won the Academy Award for Best actress for “Butterfield 8”.
