Clay Aiken Speaks About Same-Sex Marriage

  • President Obama’s announcement last week that he supports gay marriage was met with some very forceful opinions on both sides of the matter, but a good many celebrities have now come forward to back up Obama’s decision, including Betty White and former “American Idol” star Clay Aiken.

Aiken appeared on the CBS show “Face The Nation” on Sunday to chime in on the issue of same-sex marriage and said he believes the country will someday look back at the negative views on the topic the same way we now look at how interracial and divorced couples were treated.

“I really strongly believe that in the next 20 years, we’re going to look back on this and be sort of ashamed of the fact that we were against this, just as we’re ashamed today that we didn’t let people of different races get married,” he said.

The singer–who gained a rabid fanbase after appearing on “American Idol” and went on to have a successful music career despite not winning the title–formally came out in 2008 after having a child with his partner. He says the support he received was overwhelming.

“We’ll ‘talk’ more later, but, suffice it to say, for the first time in recent memory, I am speechless,” Aiken wrote on his fanpage. “I’m so proud to know and love all of you.”

Aiken now says he feels that same-sex couples are even more widely accepted and that things have changed just in recent years in country music.

“I think today it’s even less conservative in the country music world than in 2003, when I was on Idol…we’ve seen people becoming more open and understanding of homosexuality,” Aiken said.
