An Android beta teardown has revealed a major upcoming change, one that could make ChatGPT and AI models even more competitive on Google’s Android OS.
Users can already install ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and others on their iOS and Android phones, but those others cannot currently be set as the default virtual assistant. As a result, Google Assistant and Gemini retain a significant advantage, since you can invoke them with your voice or by pressing a button.
In one of their latest beta teardowns, the good folks over at Android Authority have discovered a major change in the making. A dialog box shows an option to choose your AI virtual assistant.

The change does come with one big caveat, however. Even after setting a different AI app as your default assistant, you will not be able to invoke it with voice commands, but the button shortcuts should work perfectly.
