The Hunger Games: Catching Fire may be even more popular than originally thought, if that's even possible. Not only is the sequel to the also wildly successful The Hunger Games about to break some impressive records, but is on track to do even better than expected.

Eight days after its release on November 22, 2013, this second movie in the Hunger Games trilogy raked in more than $250 million. Only The Avengers and The Dark Knight have ever made $250 million faster. However, the film is currently on pace to make $75 to $80 million over Friday, Saturday and Sunday, which would mean it could be the second best, second weekend earnings of all time, trailing The Avengers.

When all of the numbers are added up, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, is on course to make $290 to $300 million so far. Not too shabby.

If you've been living under a rock for the past few years, or just haven't had any interest in this hugely popular series based on the young adult novels by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, follows heroine Katniss Everdeen after she wins her country's 74th annual Hunger Games.

It seemed like just about everyone on Twitter was cheering for Katniss this weekend:

Another movie that has done better than initially anticipated this weekend is Disney's Frozen, which is expected to make $100 million since its November 27, 2013 opening date.

Both films beat the Thanksgiving weekend box office record of $82.4 million, set by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in 2001.
