After a rumor and a leak from the teaser site’s source code, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is finally official. Even before rumors started to swirl around the title, it was pretty much a given that the Castlevania title that helped to rejuvenate the 20-plus-year-old franchise would get a sequel. After all, the first Lords of Shadow left players with a massive tease for future titles.
The three minute debut trailer is unfortunately all prerendered footage so don’t expect any gameplay here. This trailer is all about setting the stage for what’s been going on in the life of Gabriel Belmont, the protagonist from the first game. It’s rather impressive and shows that the game is going to keep its massive scale intact from the first game.
It’s worth noting that the trailer contains a fair amount of spoilers from the first game. If you have yet to play Lords of Shadow, I suggest that you refrain from watching the trailer. Let’s just say that the game is probably not going to go as far into the future as the first game hinted at, but Gabriel is still afflicted with his curse.
As for the very end of the trailer, it’s all really speculation right now as to who the mystery warrior is. Plenty of fans are speculating that it’s Alucard and that would make sense. Lords of Shadow is set in a different timeline from the regular Castlevania series so a new Alucard would give Mercurysteam a chance to explore his character in different ways than past Castlevania games.
As for platforms, the trailer only mentions Xbox 360 and PS3 at the moment. The rumor from Paul Gale said that it would also be hitting the Vita and Wii U. If it is hitting the Wii U, we will probably hear about it during Nintendo’s press conference on June 5. Either way, the game will not be coming until 2013. To hold you over, Konami will be publishing a new 3DS Castlevania game this year that’s also being developed by the talented guys over at Mercurysteam.
