It’s no secret that the Call of Duty franchise is one of the most successful gaming ventures in history. What many gamers might not know, however, is just how many people continue to play the older games in the series.
This week Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, the director of programming for Xbox LIVE, announced the top 20 games on Xbox LIVE for 2012. Four of the top ten games are Call of Duty titles:
- Call of Duty: Black Ops II
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
- Halo 4
- Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
- Call of Duty: Black Ops
- FIFA Soccer 13
- FIFA Soccer 12
- Battlefield 3
- Halo: Reach
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- Borderlands 2
- Assassin’s Creed III
- Skyrim
- Madden NFL 13
- Gears of War 3
- NBA 2K13
- NBA 2K12
- Far Cry 3
- Grand Theft Auto IV
- Forza Motorsport 4
It’s pretty incredible to see that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which was released in 2009, is beating blockbuster titles released this year, such as Borderlands 2, Assassin’s Creed III, and Madden NFL 13. It’s also pretty stunning to see that last year’s Modern Warfare 3 beat out Halo 4.
Hryb also listed the Top 20 Xbox LIVE arcade title purchases of 2012, and there are no surprises. Record-breakers Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition and Trials Evolution led a list of surprisingly good arcade titles:
- Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
- Trials Evolution
- The Walking Dead
- Pinball FX2
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Castle Crashers
- Gotham City Impostors
- I Am Alive
- Fruit Ninja Kinect
- Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD
- Trials HD
- Magic 2013
- Fez
- Dungeon Defenders
- Alan Wake’s American Nightmare
- Peggle
- The Simpsons Arcade Game
- REAL STEEL
- Toy Soldiers: Cold War
- Full House Poker
