AT SXSW Interactive, Bump.com (not to be confused with Bump Technologies), announced the launch of an interesting license plate messaging Android app and mobile site.

The company says the app lets users “safely” send voice, email, photo, and SMS messages to a vehicle’s license plate.

“Social, safety and business communication govern the parameters of our daily lives,” says Bump. “Social uses include introductions, compliments or invitations. Safety includes anything from a heads up about a broken tail light to an admonishment for an unsafe driving maneuver to a warning that something’s happening to your car.”

Hmm. Social media meets road rage perhaps?

Bump brings social to the license plate“License plate messaging is a new form of mobile/web communication that enbales users to send messages to an automobile’s license plate by combining the license plate state abbreviation and license plate number,” the company explains. “For example, the inbox for California license plate 123ABC is [email protected]. BUMP.com has created an email inbox for every registered vehicle in America.”

In a FAQ document, Bump says it doesn’t access any DMV or related database information, only getting license plate info from the user.
