  • Mobile app maker Bump Technologies has raised a $16m series B round of funding, led by Andreessen Horowitz, and including investments from Sequoia and others. Netscape founder Marc Andreessen will also be joining their board along with Greg McAdoo from Sequoia.

Bump co-founder and CEO David Lieb shared a little about the companies plans with WebProNews. "The latest round of funding will help us to continue to build a world-class engineering and product organization to build engaging mobile to mobile products to further our impressive user growth," he tell us. "We want to make your phone useful for interacting in the real world, not just the virtual world."

"Right now with Bump, in addition to contact information, people with iPhones or Android phones can share photos, music, calendar appointments and location, and can also become friends on social networks and send messages to one another," he explains. "We’ll continue to build the product to allow people to connect and share even more things."

While Bump does some pretty cool things for consumers, businesses can look for its B2B value to increase as well. "In the next year, we’ll be rolling out even more interesting ways for business and venues to use Bump to interact with their patrons," Lieb says.

Bump CEO David Lieb Talks About What Bump Is up toWhen asked what Bump will be able to do a year from now that it can’t do today, Lieb simply says, "We’re working to make sharing across mobile devices easier, quicker and more intuitive to use for both person to person interactions and within the real world."

Right now, Bump is just available for iOS and Android. On moving beyond these, Lieb says, "We’re working on improving sharing and engagement on both of these platforms. We do plan to eventually move to other platforms, but for now, we’re focused on iOS and Android."

You can expect Bump to take full advantage of HTML5 with its apps. The company is currently looking for developers in this area. "HTML5 is getting to the point where it is almost indistinguishable from apps running natively on these devices," Lieb tells us. "One of the advantages is that you can deploy and iterate more quickly with web based apps than native apps."

"We want to continue to add interesting stuff to our app, and more and more of that can be HTML5 based as we go forward," he adds.

As far as business use cases, people can already exchange money using Bump, courtesy of PayPal. Look for Bump to make a bigger splash in the mobile payments space as other companies like Google, Square, and PayPal itself look to do the same.
