Betsy Drake met Cary Grant back in 1949 when they were on board the Queen Mary headed back to the U.S. from England. They married just a few months later on Christmas Day. She was 26 and he was 45.
The two moved to Hollywood and starred in a radio series called Mr. and Mrs. Blanding. Betsy Drake eventually switched from acting to writing. She wrote the script for the film Houseboat, in which she planned to star opposite her husband. He had by then started cheating on Drake with Sophia Loren, so he arranged for Loren to take Betsy Drake’s place in the film.
Can you imagine someone trying to pull off a stunt like that in Hollywood today?
