Basketball Wives Get Picked Up for a Fifth Season

“Basketball Wives”, the VH1 program that chronicles the day-to-day antics of a group of women who just so happen to be “romantically involved” with professional basketball players, has been renewed for a fifth season. In the wake of all the cancellations within the television industry, I’m sure a lot of people are wondering why this one continues to breed new episodes when their favorite show got dropped like a hot potato.

The renewal has been announced in the middle of a protest that claims the program glorifies and promotes bullying and violence. Shed Media, the company which co-produces the program, says that these issues and concerns are being addressed for the next season. Instead of beating the living crap out of one another when things get heated, producers are trying to steer the cast towards more peaceful, non-violent solutions to their problems.

“Shed Media US is fully committed to telling the compelling stories of the Basketball Wives in a balanced way. Our producing partner Shaunie O’Neal feels strongly about this, and we fully agree with this stance. We support her as she encourages the cast members to work out issues in a non-violent fashion. We look forward to working with her and the rest of the cast on conveying more balance in the next season,” the company said in a prepared statement.

The complaints refer to the number of times the cast has kicked, screamed, punched, cursed, and pummeled one another over the course of four seasons. One fight in particular escalated to the point that a lawsuit was actually filed by one of the cast members against another. However, if watching grown women smack each other around like they were maladjusted high school students is your thing, you’ve jumped aboard a little too late, my friend.

Judging from some of the responses swirling around Twitter this afternoon, there are a lot of people who think these women aren’t representing themselves very well.
