Amazon Studios has just signed on for a new series based on sci-fi heroine Barbarella, reports Deadline.
Barbarella got her start as the title character in an early 60s French comic from author Jean-Claude Forest. In 1968, she hit the silver screen in a film adaptation starring Jane Fonda. Although fairly unpopular at the time if its release, Barbarella was rereleased 9 years later and has since become a sort of cult classic. Film remakes have been discussed over the years, but all of them ultimately fell through.
Now, writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade – plus producer Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) – are at the helm.
The Gaumont International Television project has been in the works for over a year.
This will be an interesting series for Amazon Studios – especially considering its cult status and prominence in pop culture. Amazon Studios recently released their first two original series, Alpha House and Betas, the former becoming the most-watched show on all of Amazon in its debut weekend.
While Amazon Studios’ initial original content forays are comedies, the studio recently took a turn toward original dramas when they ordered a pilot from X-Files creator Chris Carter.
