Archer Aviation has spent years chasing the dream of electric air taxis that whisk passengers above gridlocked streets. On Tuesday the company took a sharp turn. It introduced Halo. This autonomous hybrid-electric vertical-takeoff aircraft carries heavy loads over long distances. No pilot sits in the cockpit. No passengers ride along.
Halo shares its bones with Thunder. Anduril unveiled that defense variant two days earlier at the Farnborough Airshow. Same airframe. Same series hybrid powertrain. Same pair of massive tilt rotors that swivel from vertical lift to forward flight. Only the payload bay changes to fit the mission.
The partnership dates to 2024. Back then Archer and the defense technology firm agreed to build a clean-sheet platform. They drew on eight years of Archer’s work in electric propulsion, battery systems, motors and manufacturing scale. The result lands in a different class. Longer range. Higher speed. Greater payload. All without a human on board.
“Over the past eight years we’ve engineered, tested and scaled the technology this platform is built on. The powertrain, the batteries, the motors, the manufacturing. Autonomy that removes pilot costs, scheduling headaches and human risk on dangerous runs.
Commercial operators have waited for exactly this mix. Offshore energy crews need reliable resupply without flying personnel over water. Freight handlers want fast links between ports and inland hubs that lack runways. Disaster responders and hospitals seek direct delivery of time-sensitive medicine or wildfire gear. Maritime missions could gain persistent autonomous support at sea.
Japan’s Marubeni Aerospace signed on as the first strategic launch partner. The subsidiary of one of Japan’s largest trading houses will collaborate on market research, use-case development and eventual introduction to customers. “Currently, even in cargo transport operations that do not require onboard crew, flights are conducted with human pilots, absorbing the cost, scheduling constraints and human exposure that come with it,” said Satoru Nakagawa, president and CEO of Marubeni Aerospace. “Halo’s unmanned, autonomous flight capabilities can address these challenges.” (Archer Aviation)
Defense demands reshape commercial timelines
But the story starts with the military. Anduril designed Thunder as a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft. It acts as a loyal wingman to crewed Apache helicopters and other armed reconnaissance aircraft. The hybrid-electric tiltrotor brings commercial-grade innovation in propulsion and rotors into a rugged, self-deploying package. It can fly long distances on its own or ship inside a standard container.

So the aircraft that carries no one may end up carrying the company. Archer’s bet on autonomy and hybrid power for cargo and combat reflects broader industry movement. Pure electric passenger taxis remain years away from widespread adoption. Hybrid tiltrotors that fly themselves can deliver value today. They bridge the gap between today’s helicopters and tomorrow’s all-electric dreams.
Thunder and Halo won’t replace every rotorcraft. They won’t empty every cargo truck. But they signal a future where vertical lift operates with greater reach, lower risk to crews and tighter economics. For Archer, the shift from passenger seats to payload bays may prove the clearer path to profit. For Anduril, the collaboration injects commercial speed into military autonomy.
