Amber Portwood, star of MTV’s Teen Mom OG, has something big to celebrate. No, it’s not her return to TV on the reality show or even her recent engagement to Matt Baier. Instead she’s celebrating something she’s had to work especially hard for–something she says is a choice she makes every single day.
Amber Portwood is celebrating three years of sobriety.
According to a report from Us Weekly, Portwood spent 17 months in prison before she finally learned the skills needed to operate outside of jail. The mom of a little girl named Leah, she no doubt sobered up–at least in part–so she could learn to be a better mom.
It was via Twitter on Sunday that Amber Portwood shared word of her celebration.

Before Amber Portwood went to prison, she appeared on the Dr. Phil Show, where she told Phil McGraw she was always high when filming Teen Mom episodes.
“This is actually my first time on stage sober, so I’m really nervous,” she told Dr. Phil. “Every time you see me on [Teen Mom], I am high,” she admitted.

On this week’s episode of Teen Mom OG, Amber Portwood introduced her cast mates and her fans to her fiance. Matt Baier is also a former addict.
We’ve been best friends for months. I wanted to do it right this time,” she said of her husband-to-be.”
Kudos to Amber Portwood for the many changes she has made in her life. And congratulations to her on three years of sobriety. Hopefully the number of years she remains sober only increases. That’s a gift her daughter will one day come to truly appreciate.
