With the recent news that Matt Flynn, formerly with Green Bay, has signed a 3-year contract with Seattle, Miami is now looking for a new quarterback. Flynn was in talks with Miami before signing the deal, but says he chose Seattle because of the people:
Talked to Flynn. Said a big factor in Sea over Mia was vibe in the building in Seattle: “The coaches, the staff–they were fantastic.”
But this doesn’t exactly leave Miami floundering; the 49ers have a free agent of their own, Alex Smith, and after a disappointing start early in his career, he had an impressive turnaround last season and helped San Francisco go 13-3. And now, he’s looking for a team.
Smith was called in to Miami for a meeting on Sunday, and since then rumors have flown around the sports world as to what move he’ll make after the five-hour interview, especially since Peyton Manning is in talks to negotiate with San Francisco and the two share a sports agent. The worry, Smith says, is that it will be a conflict of interest. It could even lead to him changing agents, but only time will tell. Manning is notorious for taking his time with decision making, and this isn’t one he’ll take lightly. For now, Smith will have to play the waiting game until Manning makes a move.
It’s rumored that Smith could get upwards of $8 million with this deal if it goes through.
Reactions were mixed in the Twitter universe:
There is no way that SF is going to just let Alex Smith walk w/o a legit backup plan to get back to NFC Champ. Game. They will get Manning
Dolphins! Striving for mediocrity yet again! Yay! Alex Smith!
