Adam Carolla Apologizes via Twitter For Anti-Gay Comments

The latest comedian to get himself into trouble over comments about the LGBT community is Adam Carolla. The former co-host of The Man Show and current host of The Car Show made some remarks on his other show, The Adam Carolla Show, that didn’t sit well with the gay and transgender community.

On a podcast, Carolla discussed last week’s online petition that called for Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie to marry. During that discussion, he had some things to say about LGBTs. Here are some of the controversial comments (NSFW):

  • “When did everybody get fuckin’ lumped in with the gays”
  • When discussing transgender people, “When the fuck did we start giving a shit about these people.”
  • “Now there’s all these variations where it’s like ‘I’m a pre-op trans-gendered trans-neutral trans-fat’ – Shut the fuck up.”

Carolla goes on to discuss other similar topics like Chaz Bono and GLAAD.  If you want to hear the whole controversial clip, there’s an audio file here.

After the podcast went viral and people voiced their disapproval, Carolla issued this apology on Twitter –

I’m sorry my comments were hurtful. I’m a comedian not a politician. 19 hours ago via WhoSay · powered by @socialditto

GLAAD took issue with the “apology,” as it is one of those “if i hurt you, then I’m sorry” types of apologies. They issued an official statement on the matter –

Adam Carolla has a history of making anti-LGBT and racist statements. Networks and advertisers should remember that attacking people who are different from him, and following it with empty apologies, is just a regular part of Carolla’s routine.”

Rather than simply condemn Carolla’s remarks, we’re going to be reaching out to our network and studio partners, as well as the development executives we’ve worked with, to let them know that this incident needs to be taken seriously when considering him for future projects.

Given his history of anti-gay and racist comments, networks and advertisers should know what their money is supporting if they choose to hire Adam Carolla. The gross intolerance that he tries to pass off as comedy should not have a place on our airwaves.

Carolla tweeted this statement to his fans just a few hours ago –

Thank you all for your kind words, as long as you guys support the show nobody can stop us. I don’t work for cbs. I work for you 4 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Carolla isn’t the first comedian to find themself in hot water with the LGBT community. When Tracy Morgan made comments during a stand-up routine about killing his hypothetical gay son, gay rights groups voiced their disapproval and Morgan later apologized.

Some comedians stood up for Tracy Morgan, however, and said that comments made by a comedian during a comedy show must be looked at as just that – comedy. Even if some people don’t find it funny, every topic is on the table for comedians and they shouldn’t have to censor themselves during a show. The great Louis C.K. defended him on Twitter –

Tracey Morgan said something wrong, evil, cruel, ignorant and hilarious. He was on a comedy stage, not at a pulpit. 62 days ago via web · powered by @socialditto

It is clear to anyone with an ability to reason and understand people that he didn’t mean a word of what he said. he was fucking around. 62 days ago via web · powered by @socialditto

So called “jokes” that push people’s buttons have been a topic of discussion at WebProNews as of late. First, we asked about the Twitter hashtag #reasonstobeatyourgirlfriend, and just yesterday we told you about a Facebook page called ” You know she playing hard yo get when your chasing her down an alleyway” that is being accused by some of promoting “rape culture.”

Where is the line drawn with comedy? Is there a line? Let us know how you feel in the comments.
