3D printers have proven to be incredibly versatile over the last year. What other machine can go from making a ship in a bottle one minute to a working gun the next? Now 3D printers are making fictional elements.
The Stratasys blog points us to a company named Proto3000 that used an Objet Connex multi-material 3D printer to create a realistic Kryptonite crystal. The team had to do a little extra outside work to give it the green glow, but everything else was made with the 3D printer.

Besides being extremely cool, Proto3000’s 3D printed kryptonite illustrates how 3D printing is increasingly being used to make prototype props in movies. They may even one day move beyond being simple prototypes and become actual props. The above Kryptonite certainly looks real enough, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see something like it show up in the planned Batman vs. Superman film coming in 2015.
