Chocolate is one of the few foods on the planet that works incredibly well with 3D printers. You just have to melt it and the extruder can take care of the rest as it lays layer upon layer of delicious chocolate to create a shape of your choosing. Now a pair of entrepreneurs out of Texas want to take the concept and create a business out of it.

In late September, piq Chocolates took to Kickstarter with an idea – a chocolate delivery service where you, the consumer, get to design your own chocolate. No longer must you go to a store and buy a preselected message. With piq Chocolates, you can design your very own chocolate bar using the company’s software. After completing the design, the company will 3D print your very own custom chocolate bar and ship it to you.

The Kickstarter campaign only has seven days left, and piq Chocolates is a little over $6,000 behind in funding of their $25,000 goal. If they can reach that goal in the allotted time, they’ll be able to open up their custom chocolate store to more people early next year. Those who Kickstart the project will get their chocolates in time for the holidays though.

It might not be the most exciting 3D printer project on Kickstarter, but it is certainly one of the most interesting. It shows how 3D printing and other technologies can help people break into a business that was once dominated by only a few shops fortunate enough to have the machinery required to print custom chocolates. All you need now is a few 3D printers and the capability to ship orders all over the nation. With the necessary funding, it can now be a reality.
