AppData, the company that monitors mobile apps for trends and provides metrics, is showing a huge decline in the number of people playing Words With Friends, the popular Scrabble-like board game app. Though the app started the month of April with more than 20 million monthly users, it now boasts only 18.3 million users – a drop of nearly 2 million players.

Zynga, the game company behind games such as Words With Friends, has certainly noticed the downward trend. Edge Online is reporting that the company is sending out surveys to Words With Friends players, asking them what features, if implemented in the game, might encourage them to play it more often. Some of the survey suggestions seem improbable for Zynga to provide, such as players losing less often or the ability to play proper nouns and slang words. Other suggestions, though, hint at features players will probably see in the future, such as ranked leaderboards, skill-level matching, and a tournament option.

Even taking this decline into account, Words With Friends is still one of the top 10 most-used mobile apps for both Android and iOS devices, according to a recent comScore report. And Words With Friends isn’t the only Zynga game to be dropping players lately. Draw Something, which Zynga acquired at the height of its faddish popularity less than two months ago, is now hemorrhaging users even faster than Words With Friends.

What do you think? Is the decline of players inevitable when it comes to highly popular game apps? Leave a comment below and let us know.

It would be nice if the game would load. I’ve tried three different browsers. Perhaps their third party cookies are to blame but I can’t even load it up with third party cookies enabled.

I can’t even get into the game this morning. I would like to be able to have more than 20 players. You are not dropping those who quit soon enough. Some of my opponents haven’t played for weeks and it hasn’t dropped them.I really enjoy the game when it works.

Games should be cancelled after 10 days; for it to take weeks is pretty improbable, but if you’re sending those players messages (perhaps trying to get them to move) that might get seen as activity by WWFs servers causing it to reset the timer (so to speak) on those games.

Either that or the game did auto-resign but didn’t update on your end. (reinstalling would fix that but only IF that’s what really happened)

Have been trying to play since yesterday! I have been playing a lot and this is most annoying. What is wrong?

  • Bill Scott

I’ve been unable to get the game to load since this morning despite trying on two different computers and several different browsers. You’re conducting a survey to find out what would make me play more? – Access to the game would help! How to lose friends and annoy people.

Forcing Pad users to use the app rather than Safari is annoying as are longer and longer ads.
Wanting more access to Facebook data is an issue – can’t play the game without it posting to the Facebook wall. It’s quite a spammy app really and I’m surprised only 2 million left

  • Joshua

I stopped playing so much because of the ads on my “ad-free” version.
