  1. Google places are not that hard to do but of course you must do some research. I actually do gooogle places for free if we are doing other work for the small business.

Don’t use your keywords in you business name or you will get banned by google. It used to work but it doesn’t anymore. To get your google place to # 1 you have to have a lot of citations on the internet. Citations are like backlinks but they don’t have a link back to your site just a mention of your business. You can get these from web 2.0 sites pretty easy.

I made the decision early on to write my blog to practitioners and not to SMBs. That results in presenting the ambiguities as well as the warts involved in the vagaries of social. Particularly as they affect a practitioner’s ability to advise SMBs. So in that regard, my blog would cause confusion even without Carer’s statement as I assume a lot about the knowledge of my audience.

But in regards to Carter’s comments, given that he did not give clear context, are imbued with ambiguity. Given the obviously intended ambiguity I am not even sure that “industry types” could actually parse what was meant. :)

I recognized this prior to publishing the comment but felt that as much as anything the comment was an implicit critique of Google’s communication strategy.

The main reason place pages aren’t taking off as Google expected them to is because there is no technical support from real employees. It’s up to the public to try and figure out what your problem could be and about 100 things you should try first before they’ll flag your message (if they are a Top Contributor who can even do so), just so an employee can show up and finally solve the issue.

Google is great at giving the public all this neat software, but not supporting it much.
I don’t think a public help forum is the best idea, but if they had actually employees that their job was to do nothing but support, while I’d still be skeptical about Google’s software, as I’ve personally seen many bugs and issues come up over and over again that were supposed to be fixed for good, I’d feel more comfortable using Google software more and more knowing real support is just around the corner and they’re paying attention to users issues rather than leaving it up to the Top Contributors to alert Google when an issue comes up that nobody can seem to suggest a fix for and probably requires employee intervention.

It amazes me that there aren’t weekly (or perhaps monthly) pickets in front of Google HQ for various reasons.

  4. Yes, Online marketing is still new for many people, many organisations, we are not really understand how it works. The said effect is the online marketing also bring many spam, junk information to you. The company really need a expert to deal with this. It is not just post your brand name on Google, blog or other internet network. It is more complex.

  5. Local online marketing is a good angle for SEO agencies to emphasize if they want to win local businesses. In addition to citations, backlinks from local directories for example (At LA if you are in Los Angelels) also plays a large part in boosting your rankings.

  6. Very good and well structured case for calling in a professional. SMB’s should be made aware of the benefits of having a strong online presence, but they are primarily concerned with lead generation and lead conversion. I’m not surprised SMB’s we’re frowning, as it’s a lot to take on board. However your article succintly spotlights the areas Search Engine Marketing specialiststs need to touch on in order to generate more traffic which helps justify the cost to the client.
