  • The New Year is upon us and now is the time when everyone starts making their New Year’s resolutions. One of the most popular resolutions that many people have for the new year is weight loss. Some people will promise to exercise more or eat right, but most will not stick to their weight loss plan for more than a couple weeks.

Don’t spend 2014 stressing out about weight loss and don’t let yourself down when it comes to your New Year’s resolution. Do weight loss the right way and you will not only see results, but be able to keep the weight off longer. One of the ways you can do that is by avoiding scams and diet fads that seem too good to be true.

Don’t expect to see results with little work and don’t believe that a pill, drink or wrap will allow you to eat anything you want. The key to weight loss success is knowing what works for you and knowing how to avoid common diet scams that will only set you up for failure.

Richard Cleland, assistant director of advertising practices for the Federal Trade Commission suggests talking your doctor before you start any type of diet or weight loss plan. You doctor will be able to help you find a diet plan that is right for you and tell you if you are healthy enough for certain types of exercise. Your doctor can also tell you if a diet or weight loss trend is dangerous or a scam.

“Products offering a ‘quick and easy solution without diet and exercise’—that’s contrary to everything we know about the science of weight loss,” says Cleland

That means staying away from diets and weight loss products that claim they can do amazing things in a small amount of time. Some scam diets and weight loss products are not only unlikely to give you the results you want, but can even be dangerous. Many diet pills are really water pills that eliminate as much water from your body as possible. If you are not drinking enough to replace this water you can become dehydrated and may even have to be hospitalized.

If you have made losing weight your New Year’s resolution, be smart about it and remember, if something seems to good to be true, it probably is. Make sure you are as determined to get healthy as you are to lose weight and remember the two go hand in hand.
