Voula Papachristou Kicked Out of Olympics for Being a Moron on Twitter
[ Life]

Voula Papachristou is a complete stranger to me, so perhaps I shouldn’t be so quick to pass judgment on the disgraced athlete. After all, every single person on this planet has done something astronomically stupid at some point in their lives. However, when you have so much at stake, so much positivity in your corner, why in the world would you want to throw it all away just to make a totally inappropriate and completely unnecessary joke on Twitter? After all, none of the folks on the popular micro-blogging site are going to give you a medal for all of your hard work. In fact, the same people who thought your post was funny will turn around and make fun of you for getting kicked out of the Olympics over something moronic.

If you’re in the dark on this subject, let’s find you some enlightenment: Days before she was scheduled to fly to London to participate in the 2012 Summer Olympics, Papachristou took to her Twitter page to issue the following message. For what reason, you ask? I’m not entirely sure. Regardless of her intent, the comment was ill-received from just about everybody who read it.

“With so many Africans in Greece … at least the West Nile mosquitos will eat homemade food!!!” she wrote. Not surprisingly, the Hellenic Olympic Committee was none too pleased with her outrageous statement, prompting officials to kick her off the team.

What in the hell was she thinking? Honestly, I’m not sure if she knew what she was doing at the time. Regardless of her intent or the guilt she feels as a direct result, her Olympic dreams have been effectively shattered over a pointless joke on a meaningless social network website. All of that hard work and training was ultimately for nothing.

As damage control, Voula issued this English-language response:

I would like to express my heartfelt apologies for the unfortunate and tasteless joke I published on my personal Twitter account. I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights.

My dream is connected to the Olympic Games and I could not possibly participate if I did not respect their values. Therefore, I could never believe in discrimination between human beings and races.

I would like to apologize to all my friends and fellow athletes, who I may have insulted or shamed, the National Team, as well as the people and companies who support my athletic career. Finally, I would like to apologize to my coach and my family.

Today’s lesson: If you want to destroy your dreams of competing in any major sporting event, say something racist on a website where millions of people can read what you wrote. That way, everyone knows you’re a moron for throwing everything away for an extremely cheap laugh.

Punishment does not fit the “crime.” Stupid comment, but not sure if it is RACIST. Seems more INSENSITIVE? And I have to wonder… if a black athlete had tweeted that, would there be such a reaction, or would it be virtually ignored? #whatamimissinghere??

    • Renee

You are missing that if you are not making fun of yourself, it is offensive. I’m genuinely tired of people having NO cultural, ethnic, moral or emotional ties to an insult and therefore dismissing its significance.

      • http://www.gravesjudo.com Mitch

And ANOTHER female (I’m guessing) hater here folks!
I have speculated that since most of those who think she was judged rightly are female that they are probably ugly jealous females. (So how does it feel to be judged unfairly Renee?)

So you are really going to sit there on you big fat lazy ass and tell us there can be NO JOKES unless they are about ones-self? Are you serious, or brain damaged?
Are you really so simple as to not understand that that attitude creates MORE problems. That it creates DEEPER cultural and personal divides. That jokes and humor break them down and cause all of us to face and admit our personal, cultural, and national(and etc) shortcomings?

But since you insist this is a racist comment “you’ve got some splainin’ to do” (that was said with a Hispanic accent so you can say I’ve insulted ALL Spanish speakers in the history of the world!)
        So NOW please explain:
We know (because we had junior high school English that the actual subject of her joke was the mosquito.
        ALSO
If there was an “American Mosquito” that had spread to EU and she made the same comment about the increased availability of Americans would it have been anti-American?
        SO not go for it!
Explain EXACTLY how the words she spoke denigrated the African race!
We await your deep and insightful comments!

    • http://yahoo dewitt

if….. thats a big word. if if if……..

  • lunacy

she will make more money off of this and get more publicity than she ever would have made through the olympics

  • Kevin O’Brien

I agree with “Lisa.” the punishment does not fit the crime. In-fact, this is not a crime at all. Then again in the banana republics outside of the United States of America, mere speech and actions of expression can be criminalized. If they do not review and recant this disciplinary action, the are punishing the Greek people as a whole. Who else is in a position to bring a Gold Medal home to them? I’d encourage Voula to seriously consider emigrating to the USA and competing for our team in 2016! Of course, this is after her Playboy layout is published and every other red-blooded American male will be willing to sponsor her! Don’t be foolish, Greece! Rethink your bad decision!

    USA! #1

    • GAYYLORDD

The broad targeted a nationality… what if she said something about americans… Now wouldn’t you be heated?? https://www.facebook.com/LaVeyPls silly redneck.

    • Satan

Yeah I agree with gaylordd silly billy

  • moose

Kevin, you ignorant slut. She’d be kicked off the US team in a heartbeat for that kind of racist idiotic statement. Wake up. From your comment, it doesn’t look like you are a Constitional scholar. Protected free speech is something that applies to specific kinds of speech in specific forums. It doesn’t insolate idiots from the consequences of what they say in the twittersphere. It looks like you love her racist statement anyway with the demeaning “Banana Republic” commentary. Maybe that is why you are so out of touch.

    • http://www.gravesjudo.com Mitch

You really need to pray for help to extract your head from that dark place it’s in.

I would dearly LOVE for someone to explain to me how this joke denigrates any race or ethnicity!
For a comment to qualify as ‘racist’ it must insinuate, impugn, denigrate, insult, or in some manner attack a race. This simply makes the ecological observation that a specific variety of bug was going to get the opportunity to feed on some of the same people it started with.
If there was an “American Mosquito” that had spread to EU and she made the same comment about the increased availability of Americans would it have been anti-American?
So We/She can’t mention Africans? REALLY?

The is just more vapid libofascist hate, trying to make issue that divide where there are none.
And guess what pal it violate logic to bring up an utterly different example of bad behavior and use it to try and validate you stupid opinion on this incident. She should not be judged on anything but exactly what she did. Nothing she has done before is relevant and CERTAINLY nothing anyone else has done is either. We also don’t get to judge her comment on her associations or any imagined intent. It is FASCIST to steal from this girl the fruit of yrs of dedication and hard work because of some hypersensitive libofascist asshats.

  • Lenka

Give me a break. What is racist about saying or or ? Insensitive maybe. Of course, it was easier for the presumably mostly overweight, presumably mostly male Greek OC officials to exclude her than to stand by her.

    • jo

racist, insensitive, still wrong. keep her ass out

      • jo-no

jo, get a life you racist pig.

        • Jamonit

I’m probably ignorant here, but what is racist about her comment? Just trying to understand what all the hoopla is about. There appears to be a type of mosquito from an area of the world populated primarily of blacks and she made the comment that the mosquitoes that originated from a mostly black area are going to be happy to have what amounts to a home cooked meal because those same blacks that came from the area where the mosquitoes came from will be reunited. Maybe I’m missing something…are there actually a lot of white people in the West Nile area? Or is it that she is grouping all blacks as West Nile blacks?

          • http://www.gravesjudo.com Mitch

            No YOU are NOT ignorant.
The hypersensitive libofascists are busy trying to stir up strife hatred and envy. Any excuse to extend the imaginary evils fo the world that will OF COURSE require more fascism to control and contain. We are all so nefarious and insidious in every thought and action that only a utopian society based on the inherent goodness of humans can work as the new world order.
(Did that seem confusing and contradictory? Well welcome the world of 1984 Newspeak and the complete abandonment of logic known variously as ‘liberalism’, ‘leftism’, ‘progessivism’, ‘communism’, ‘fascism’, etc

Be afraid my friend….but if it ever starts making sense to you…then you are really screwed

  • Nina Nunez

Wow, I think its a good that the hellenic Olympic committee kicked her out. She is representing her country and if they let her go to the olympics, then they are condoning her behavior. I believe the same would happen to anyone who made a racist, insensitive remark. Her behavior is moronic and how else would she have been punished?

    • http://www.gravesjudo.com Mitch

Another female hater here folks. Are you ugly and jealous or just too stupid to really comprehend what the girl said?
(BTW how does it feel to be judged unfairly?)

Would any of the MORONS who have attacked this girl be suggesting such a thing? NOPE because they’d all be just to obviously brain damaged..BUT because of her alleged ties to a supposed “right of center” party she can’t mention Africans? REALLY.
Regardless of what she really believe about race she deserves to be left unmolested UNTIL she actually does something wrong. TO punish someone for what they MIGHT believe is perverse tyrannical fascist behavior.

      So come on Nina!
Explain EXACTLY how her comment is racist…we all await you wisdom! LOL

      • Al

She deserves to be kicked out and I’m no female.
This is not about being racist. This is about her not being fit to be an international diplomat for the olympics.
Nobody cares about the joke if you’re a nobody. But if you are a diplomat representing your country, this is not the behavior you expect from a diplomat in an international event. She should be fired. By the way, she’s hot, and I will boink her anytime, but she cannot hold the job of a diplomatic olympian.

      • http://yahoo dewitt

it does not matter if she is racist or not she is of the team. her career is damage for the rest of life. since you guys want to defend her go be her sponsors….lmfao…

  • Joe

Ridiculous. This is political correctness taken to an insane level. She is excited, she made a joke. Europe (and Todd) needs to get a sense of humor.

    • Dano

I completely agree! Can’t people take a joke anymore?

  • T.Doom

Ouch… and handed down from the birthplace of the Olympics too… oh the irony.

The comment was distasteful, immature, inappropriate… but funny in a twisted kind of way, at least to one who’s colorblind. To me, this was on par with the “slanted-eye” gesture made by the Spanish basketball team back in 2008 where the official stance was:
“This was clearly inappropriate, but we understand the Spanish team intended no offence and has apologised,” Emmanuelle Moreau, a spokeswoman for the International Olympic Committee, said in an e-mail. “The matter rests there as far as the IOC is concerned.”

Lastly, call me f@#*in shallow but I think she’s hot.

    • http://www.gravesjudo.com Mitch

OK so it seems you agree the comment was NOTE racist:
So explain how an observation about a bug was “distasteful, immature, inappropriate”?

For a comment to qualify as ‘racist’ it must insinuate, impugn, denigrate, insult, or in some manner attack a race. This simply makes the ecological observation that a specific variety of bug was going to get the opportunity to feed on some of the same people it started with.
If there was an “American Mosquito” that had spread to EU and she made the same comment about the increased availability of Americans would it have been anti-American? REALLY?
Regardless of what she really believe about race she deserves to be left unmolested UNTIL she actually does something wrong. TO punish someone for what they MIGHT believe is perverse tyrannical fascist behavior.
This girls worked for yrs to achieve this level of athleticism and it’s being stolen for the flimsiest of excuses.

I also notice that most of those who agree she should be banned are female. I am going to guess they are ugly jealous females. I know they are stupid for sure.

      • T.Doom

A comment does not have to be racist to be inappropriate.

West Nile Virus is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes that can be a deadly in severe cases, and it is generally deemed inappropriate to make jokes about diseases that people have to suffer through. While she did not mention the disease explicitly, the implication is there for people to misinterpret.

Then again, the severity of the inappropriateness is subjective and up to one’s interpretation.

  • dreamkillerbytwitter

The “what if” is pointless because a black athlete didn’t make the tweet, she isn’t the first to loose out for tweeting something inappropriate, nor will she be the last, as harsh as it is, anyone black, white, brown etc… need to start taking more responsibility for the things they say or in this case “tweet”.

  • bill

I believe Todd’s thinking is moronic. The world is full of this political correctness crap,it stinks. To think we are supposed to automatons and act like everyone else. Human beings, are by nature different from one another. If other people perceive, or worse, are ooooffended by something that someone says they are immediately called on to apologize. Or just like Todd’s extreme judgement”astronomically stupid comment is the act of a coward. Let her speak her mind and moose, get over yourself, get out of your protected hole and that idiotic mind set that everything is rrrrracist.Look up the term racism you might become enlightened. She should never have been kicked out of the Olympics for such a trivial thing.Plus she is pretty hot to look at.

    • Dgrogans

I agree with you 100%! if i wanna crack a gay, mexican, jew etc. joke its no big deal… who cares? people need to pull the stick out and lighten up a little.

    • jo

judging by these comments alone you’re all stupid
the point is that she made racially insensitive remarks at the wrong time and place. it happens, I’m glad they kicked her ass off. maybe she should keep her mouth shut. its 2012 not 1912 people will be on your ass for gunning for the black community.

      • Dgrogans

I AM BLACK! and to that point i realy couldn’t care less about her stupid joke… when I hear people make comments like she made I just say “whatever” with a grain of salt… like you said its 2012… I have a white wife and mixed kids… people like her dont offend me and people like you need to lighten up and mind your own business.

        • Tall Lady

Please don’t make the mistake of telling people to lighten up on racial issues. Just because you are lucky enough to live in a bubble of acceptance doesn’t mean the world is all love and no hate. In Europe they still yell out racist comments at soccer players, there is no affirmative action to force anyone to hire or not fire you and no civil rights laws. Now please out of respect for all the black civil rights leaders that didn’t “lighten up’ during the civil rights movement, know that it is because they complained that you are able to live in this “bubble” you are in now in the USA. Please do your research and know that Europe, Latin america and Arab nations are still in need of their civil rights movement for minorities that live there.

In response to the lady being kicked off, yes it was harsh and yes you have a right to be against immigration in your country, but when you choose to be part of an entity (be it Olympics, the KKK, the church) you have to project their ideals and tweeting an insensitive joke at a whole nation is not what the Olympics is about sorry.

      • jo-no

Jo, I’m offended by your comment saying, “I’m glad they kicked her ***…”. Obviously your insensitive remarks mean you should be fired from your job. Maybe if you keep your views out side of work to yourself, you wouldn’t be fired. Its 2012, not 1912.

      • http://www.gravesjudo.com Mitch

  • Billy Smith

The only moron is this idiotic writer, Todd. This gal is hot, outspoken, opinionated, and that is offensive to a qweeb punk like Todd. Get a life, you pinhead pussy.

  • DARRIN

So if the Olympics were in Africa and and African athelete said “with all the Greeks here, at least our lions can enjoy some white meat”, would that be RACIST? As a white person, I would find it humorous. A joke about race does not make it racist! The fact that this girl was suspended is beyond stupid.

    • Dgrogans

yes… that joke would also be considered racist… not that I think its a big deal but just to be clear racialy based tweets are still considered racist even if a minority is the one making the comment. I mean just earlier this year MLB manager Ozzie Gullen got in trouble for making a racial comment regarding fidel castro and people were calling for his job! so get off your “white people are the only ones who get in trouble for this type of stuff” high horse!!!

      • http://www.gravesjudo.com Mitch

This is how confused people are about the over-use of the race card. Ozzie Guillen did not get in trouble for making a RACIAL comment about Fidel Castro. He got in trouble with Cuban-Americans in Florida for saying he admired Fidel Castro. Race had nothing to do with it.

    • KLAN

It is not racist but it is targeting a nationality… now if she said Americans people would be quick to lynch and boycott the olympics

      • Bob

African is not a nationality. You can be ugandan, rwandan, or from any other nation in africa. African simply refers to the fact that you live in africa.

get over it..she’s dine stick a fork in her.

  • Matt712

The reference seemed to be more about geography than race. Could she have used better judgement in posting a potentially controversial Tweet? Sure, but what is she like 22 years old? A simple explanation to Voula of the sensitivities involved and an apology by her would have much better embodied the the good will and spirit of the Olympic Games than kicking her out. Zero tolerance does not bridge the gap of understanding one another in this world…. In fact, it created it in the first place.

    • http://www.gravesjudo.com Mitch

      AH…a voice of reason.

    • Judy

      Well said

  • Mathew

Why is her Human Rights of Free Speech in Democratic countries being violated? She doesn’t have to like what she sees around her. She shouldn’t have to be silent. She should not have to give up her right to have a voice on any subject.

    • Jake Rodriguez

But your missing the point fool. The Olympics is an event to bring all cultures together as a family through sports. There are no “jokes”. Your right, she doesn’t have to remain silent, but she doesn’t have to compete either…lol

    • KKK

You are obviously american and not seem to understand European laws.

      • Bob

She didn’t break a european law!

    • Al

The moment she agreed to become an International Sports Diplomat for the Olympic Games, she has given up her right to talk shit and crap jokes about other races. Free speech does not mean you can start calling everyone this and that, or giving tasteless jokes about other races. Free Speech comes with responsibility. Sure you can talk crap and shit, that’s your prerogative, but don’t expect you will get a job and don’t expect anyone to have any respect for you.

  • Ola Antonsen

This is what Europe has become. You can not say anything on impulse anymore since you may offend someone and lose your job or career. “Diversity” is code word for living in an Orwellian-jail with no hope in sight.

    • Slut

It seems that Europeans seem to be MoralFags

    • Al

Being in the Olympics means you are an International Sports Diplomat representing your country. She is not in the same position as you are. She is SOMEBODY and you are a NOBODY. So you can say anything you want, but you will NEVER be a diplomat with tasteless jokes about other races. Get it ?
The French diplomat assigned in Germany may hate Germans, but the French diplomat will never say anything in public to antagonize Germany – or he will get kicked out immediately.
So, sure she can joke anything she wants, but she can’t be an international sports diplomat – she should be fired, because she does not know the meaning of being an international sports diplomat.

      • murad seyyithan

This has nothing to do with freedom of speech.

You can say anything about any nation, any race all day,(which many of the supporters of her do anyway )
        no one really cares.

but if you like to benefit from the privileges of an organisation like the olimpics , you would be expected at least to share the values and the spirit of it.

am i making sense here ?

  • Andy

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, the Olympics are supposed o be about sports. Therefore, Olympians must stay away from making racist, political, social, or religious comments. She is not a comedian, nor is she a politician, and the Internet is the LAST place to tell a controversial joke. She deserves to be out of the Olympics because she is clearly unfit to represent Greece and the spirit of oneness that the Olympic games are meant to inspire.

As for the people that comment on here, keep in mind that your opinions are your own and you ought to respect the opinions of others, especially since they are not intended to offend you specifically.

Take note athletes, watch what you say. Once you share it online, you’re risking a lot more than your Facebook, YouTube, or twitter account.

When a young person makes a questionable decision, it’s the elder’s who should take the opportunity to teach. There is no lesson here. It’s another example of mindless leadership inadequacy. Wisdom requires the application of prudence. Voula lacked it for a moment. The Hellenic Olympic Committee lacks it completely… but then… there’s that huge debt to consider. Politics makes pawns of us all.

  • Serge

The comment may not be racist but it is targeting a nationality… What if she said “With all the Americans here now the terrorist have someone to bomb”… Now tell me wouldn’t you be butthurt?

    • Likes funny jokes…I like YOU

Butthurt?? No that’s actually a bit tasteless, but still funny!!! How about if you were publicly humiliated now for writing that joke in bad taste?? Hers only targeted a vast demographic!!! Africa is an entire continent!!! So we should get to see naked pictures of her on the web now and let her compete in the freakin games!!!

  • Mike

I’m with Ola, Matthew, and Mitch! I’m so of these libofacist hypocrites! Anything says Andy, dreamkillerbytwiiter, Doom, Nina, and Jo are all black! Dgrogans just confirmed he’s black but with a white and mixed kids and at least he has a sense of humor so he must be all that bad! As far as Ozzie Gullen’s comments about Fidel Castro goes Fidel Castro’s hispanic not white. Had a white person said whatever it is the guy said about Fidel Castro he probably would’ve faced bigger consequences! It’s people like Andy, dreamkillerbytwitter, Doom, Nina, and Jo who are the reason why there are still white people like me harbor a certain degree if not a full degree by racial hostility! I’m not a “politaclly correct” person nor do I plan to be! It’s so hypocritical how white people get labeled “racist” when they truely practice traditional conservative family values, truely practice Christianity, don’t support Barack Obama, and don’t support liberal ideas yet black people never get persecuted for starting fights with police officers, calling them “pigs”, killing their own people and ours too, beating and raping their own women and ours too, starting fights with white people, calling us “crackers”, using “history” (especially when some slaves weren’t black and some masters weren’t white) as a excuse not to do something positive with their lives, and asking for hand-outs from the government instead of legitimately earning a living! And you wonder where white people like me get our racial hostility from! That’s where! So this goes out to whomever I offend! If you’re looking a problem go take a look in the mirror!

      • Likes funny jokes…I like YOU

Mike’s just not a guilty white!!! Like me he doesn’t care how dark your tan is!!! Whether you speak Spanish or not!!! Whether you want to cry about him stating that he doesn’t feel sorry for a group of people that want something for free (not the entire group either…well you would know that if you could read the properly spelled words)

This was NOT a racist remark from this girl!!! Anyone who says otherwise is afraid of what Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson would say to you because you didn’t do what THEY say to do!!!

    • Mike

You are partly right and partly wrong

      • Likes funny jokes…I like YOU

        But they are mostly WRONG!!!

  • Al

Yeah, if she was a NOBODY, like all of you here who said this was just a small joke, then nobody cares about this joke.

However, if you are an important Diplomat of your country representing an international event like the Olympics, she should be kicked out as a Diplomat. That’s right – being in the Olympic team is being a diplomat of your country, which you represent and carry with HONOR.

This joke is a toilet joke which no diplomat on his/her sane mind should post on a website.

  • West Nile mosquito

    I find this offensive.

    • African

      BITE ME!!!

  • Mike

Clearly racist also a member of some white supremist organization

  • JD

Thank god…finally, free speech is dead! Now assimilate!

    • Why are you so stupid?

Do you know what “free speech” means? Is not an international right. It’s a US constitional right. And it is not enforceable against everybody, just the U.S. government, i.e., if you say some dumb shit, a private company can fire your for it. I hate when people mindlessly say stupid ass shit. Like, can’t you spare 5 mins of your time to google “free speech” before talking about it being dead?

  • jason

maybe todd rigney will lose his blog for being moron… we can hope

  • Judy

This is not racist. She said Africans and Nile. They atre both from Africa Get it? . What is racist is thinking every joke with the word Afican is racist. It maybe nationality- ist. There are white humans from Africa.

  • Jon

People who are moaning about free speech, just shut the hell up! There is a limit to free speech, you can’t shout fire into a crowded theater when there isn’t a fire.

Also, as a 23 year old, I would expect her to know what she says can affect her. Come on, she’s not some 14 year old middle schooler. And besides, Twitter and Facebook has been around for years and there are always news stories of people being fired, students expelled etc for saying controversial things on social media. It’s not like she doesn’t know any better.

    • Bob

There was nothing racist about her remark. She didn’t single out a specific race. For those of you who are unable to understand the meaning of words “African” is not a race! The Olympic commitee needs to apologize to Voula immediately and reinstate her! What a bunch of idiots they are! If someone made a joke about americans you wouldn’t assume any specific ethnicity now would you. What the committees action proves is that they are the ones who are the racists because that is where the thoughts went immediately even though not one racist word was said!

      • The truth

Shut the fuck up! It’s annoying to me to even read your ignorant and nonsense comment. I never comment or reply on these articles, but in this case I made an exception.

        • FREE American

Practice what you type!!! Your comment was worse, and your white guilt is shining through you idiot!!!

  • Nebulon

As it has been said before: “one can laugh about everything, but one cannot laugh about everything with everyone”. I think miss Voula will not forget this lesson.

  • Nick

Why is it that so many modern whites, in both europe and the americas, have this tendency to try to outdo each other at expressing hyperbolic outrage and indignation toward another white at the tiniest, most inconsequential remark that can be considered ‘racist’ ? Yet, these same people could care less when it’s the other way around.

    • lulu

      agreed.

    • Donny

      Very well said Nick!!!

  • Jackson

I’m sorry, but I find the fact she got kicked out of Olympics for one tasteless comment quite hilarious. I can’t help but giggle when I realize that it was her main goal to get into the Olympics, and that has now been crushed and stomped on by so many offended people.

I guess she can make a sex tape now. It would be easier to do that rather than work and kiss people’s butts until they forgive you enough to let you compete again.

    • Pat Mercer

That means she is dumb and don’t be like her!!

  • ToddRigneySucks

its not even a racist joke, its not even a joke really its kind of a weird thing to say but you def shouldnt get banned from the olympics for it. Awful decision, SHE isnt disgraced, the people who made the decision to ban her are are.

    • Veronica

So if I say you (not that I know you or this is true) but if I say well you are a fat piece of lard but at lease you are never cold then it should be ok???? Because I mean I am JUST JOKING. So you are saying as long as we say well it was just a joke or I was just kidding that makes it ok? So I guess bullying is ok? and I guess hazing is ok? and I guess mean comments are ok? because I mean after all IT WAS JUST A JOKE.

      • Nick

Even if you’re serious, it’s okay. You can think I’m a fat piece of lard. You see, you are not responsible for my self-image, my self-esteem or my general happiness. You can say anything you like about me and I’m fine with it. I, on the other hand, must be very careful when I speak to you, because apparently, my words could irreparably damage not only your self-esteem but that of all the other members of your /gender/race/religion/sexual orientation/preference in pets/ This is what it means to be a WASP. We are solely responsible not only for our own happiness, but apparently also the happiness of every other group on the planet. I am sorry that from time to time, one of us fails to make everyone else feel good about themselves. Perfection is not as easy as we make it look.

  • Darklighter

Good call Nick. The White Guilt of people like Todd Rigney must be so heavy to constantly carry around. Lay down the burden Todd and just lighten up…it was a joke. Calm down people.

    • Veronica

So if I say you (not that I know you or this is true) but if I say well you are a fat piece of lard but at lease you are never cold then it should be ok???? Because I mean I am JUST JOKING. • http://www.providencewomensrecovery.com marck

Its weird, for whatever reason I really believe she is not a racist, just an idiot. I think I can see her endorsement deals setting sail as well. What a dumb immature mistake.

  • A. Realist

We’re always so quick to shoot the messenger, aren’t we? Moron, Stupid, Racist, Hateful, Xenophobe. Everyone is so quick to judge her as a person and not question WHY the joke came about. Stereotypes came about for a reason, and tasteless jokes often satirize public problems. Immigration is a huge problem for most Mediterranean countries. Greece is bankrupt yet is still being overwhelmed by African immigrants. Italy is over-run by them as well as Spain. Third-world immigration is a huge problem both socially and economically. It is the elephant in the room that no one can confront because of Europe’s misguided multicultural policies and childish political correctness. The citizens are helpless to change anything, so they make light of a difficult situation. Should she have tweeted that joke for the world to see? Probably not. Should she have apologized? Not at all. But still the punishment does not fit the “so-called-crime”.

    • Veronica

So based on your assessment then we should all be able to say whatever we want about something as long as our country is suffering from it. So because we have immigration problems (which really we are all immigrants no matter how long ago you immigrated) then we, I or whoever can make negative comments about other people and face no punishment and not even a slap on the wrist, I shouldn’t even have to apologize? What if we taught our children that???? ” Well honey they shouldn’t have come here so say whatever you want about them darn the consequences no don’t feel bad and no don’t apologize”……….That is terrible logic. Sounds a little like a sociopath. Do whatever you want who cares how other people feel.

    • Angelo

You are right realist, but you forgot to mention the west Nile virus Mosquitos immigrating in Greece also, but what voula failed to realize is that if the Mosquitos wanted home cooked meals the would have stayed home they wouldn’t immigrated to Greece, the reason to came to Greece is to try something different, another words it would be like me going to Germany to eat some Greek food. She doesn’t make any sense what so ever.

  • lulu

it isn’t a racist joke. Racism is when you hate or discriminate against someone because of their race. If anything, it is racist against non-Africans because the mosquitos don’t like them as much! It is however a bad joke. So, if telling a stupid joke gets you kicked out of the Olympics, then everyone had better keep quiet.

  • Donny

Sad thing is that if she had been a “black” athlete this would have been a non-issue!!! If a tasteless joke (yet still something that people will laugh at) is so offensive that she is to be scorned for it…then the Olympics committees have bigger issues, and need to re-evaluate what an insult is, and what a derogatory racist statement REALLY is!!!

How many black comedians have made jokes at white peoples expense yet its okay…but let a white girl tell a joke that mentions Africans (There are white Africans too…ever hear of apartheid and it’s atrocities?) and she must be publicly lashed for her lack of a tan!!!

This is pure BS and she should still be allowed to compete!!! This is NOT a justified punishment!!!

    • Veronica

Those are comedians, those aren’t athletes representing a country in the Olympics. So you mean to tell me your place of work if you are representing them to every other country in a nationally televised event, that they wouldn’t seek termination or a sever form of punishment if you made a racist remark that circulated to untold numbers of people??? Regardless of how thoughtless the action was if you are representing something BIGGER than yourself as big as a whole NATION and you make a derogatory comment then you will be reprimanded. In the military we can’t make certain comments or we WILL get kicked out. If you want to make tasteless rude and derogatory comments then do it when you are NOT REPRESENTING a major establishment.

      • Donny

Just what was derogatory?? Are you saying that you don’t tell jokes EVER?? Not one part of what she said had to do with any race, just any person that lives on the continent of Africa!!! That is what you are saying that it was okay for her to be removed from this competition?? Well I strongly disagree because you are WRONG!!!

      • Hank

It’s funny how people don’t see a problem with this statement. How in the Hell can you compare what a comedian says with the words/staement a person that suppose to represent his/her country. You all are DUMBA**ES!!!
But let someone just mention gun control and you go crazy.
Just so you know I have 7 guns!
I am a black man that has been stop by the police for no reason and I know what racism sounds like and what it looks like.

By the way I don’t care what color you are, I try to treat everyone with respect FIRST!

    • http://webpronews.com robert myrick

First of all there are plenty of white comedians that make black jokes. Hell black comedians make fun of themselves, and I really doubt if she had been black and made any tasteless joke about white people that it would get dismissed there is no double standard when it comes to representing your country. It wasn’t black people that kicked her off it was her COUNTRYMEN!!!

      • Donny

Elitist countrymen that are afraid of the predominantly black population of the continent of Africa!!! That still doesn’t make it okay and this still is no racist comment!!!

  • USMC

Man, you white people need to quit! Why do you think you can say whatever about another race and its ok.Well its not!I didn;t think the snowbunny joke was funny at all.She need to go home and regroup.

    • gun owner

but you can make fun of white people all day and its acceptable right?? The double standard you guys seem to have needs to be “regrouped” if anything does!!!

Racism is way top prevalent on ALL sides!!! doesn’t make any of the hate itself right!!! I’m white and the best friend I have ever had was black!!! I hadn’t seen or heard from him for almost 30 years before we found each other on Facebook…

Bottom line is that the “N-bomb” is not a part of MY families vocabulary…can YOU say the same?? How about “honkey” or “cracker”?? You can’t have it both ways bro!!!

By your USMC I’m going to guess that you are a Marine!!! I thank you for your service!!! I don’t care what color you are either!!!

      • gun owner

By the way, before it gets misconstrued…

I call EVERYBODY “bro”!!! I am a union electrician and we call each other brothers and sisters, so don’t think that I meant that in a racist way!!! Again USMC…Thank you for serving!!!

      • Nana

I fully agree with you! It doesn’t matter what color skin anyone has. What makes some people think they’re better than others (ignorance)?

    • Angelo

If you can’t make a joke about the other guy who can you joke about? I personally don’t think she is a racist , I think she heard the joke she thought it was funny and she wanted to share it with her fans , maybe she thought if she can’t win a medal in the Olympics she should try to jump start her stand up comedy career, maybe she thought she could be the next Chris Rock or something.

    • http://WWW.NOCIRC.ORG Bob Fairlane

You jungle bunnies need to go home and regroup.

      • Donny

Bob!!! Your wife/sister called…your uncle/daddy got lost in the yard…they think he may be stuck in your old beat up pickup truck, with your dog, trying to drive to town to go see the black family he wants to join to get away from YOU!!!

    • dino

Just because you are African, does not mean you are Black. Not all AFRICANS are black… She did not Say black or the N word. What if she said all English have bad teeth? Is that Racist? Not all English are white, there are Black Englishmen.

  • Cardo

She has links to a Greek racist party..Golden Dawn read up about them…there’s no question about her being a racist because that’s what she is!

    • http://WWW.NOCIRC.ORG Bob Fairlane

Golden Dawn is awesome. Greece for the Greeks!

      • Donny

Ah the Greeks…the Macedonians, the Spartans, the Athenians ALL GAY MEN!!! Sure they had sex with women to procreate and they DID have children…Like young boys (to rape), and fellow men for “recreational” sex!!!

Greece for Freaks is more like it Aryan!!!

  • Lashanda

I’ am black and I do not see this as a racist comment let her go to the Olympics You are all wrong. Grow up people. Quit throwing the race card everywhere

    • realist

AMEN TO THAT!!! You go girl!!! tell em about it!!!

      • You can’t be African

You MUST be AFRICAN-AMERICAN … if you are AFRICAN, something’s off if this does not offend you.

        • Donny

Why should ANYONE be offended?? I didn’t bring the West Nile mosquitoes to Greece!!! Why would anyone be offended that there was a comment about the continent that they came from?? Unless it’s the skeeters that you are referring to?? Or you are a WHITE African that still has that racist apartheid crap on the brain!!! Idiot!!!

          • Treats

She didn’t make a comment about a continent. She made the comment about an entire race. She said African not Africa. It was truly racist and I’m glad the prick is out of the Olympics. She must of forgot that the Olympics stands for world unity.

        • Mario Sandez

I`m an african, but my hair is red and my skin is white, should I feel offended? `coz I don`t know

    • You can’t be African

You MUST be AFRICAN-AMERICAN … if you are AFRICAN, something’s off if this does not offend you…

And now that I see the name “Lashanda,” I’m guessing I am right.

    • Galer Dolan

      Thank you.

      • Callie

Or, the poster is white and online passing.

Personally, people who don’t view this as racist AND xenophobic are probably racist and xenophobic.

Let her sit home and tweet about WATCHING the games.

    • Galer Dolan

Lashanda, Thanks for your comment. (I wrote to thank you the other day, but I’m computer inept and the “thank you” ended up under the comment of someone calling himself “you can’t be African”.)

  • http://WWW.NOCIRC.ORG Bob Fairlane

The Olympics need to be boycotted and shut down anyway. It’s run by a sick globalist organization that brings negroes into white countries. Voula isn’t “disgraced.” Voula is awesome. What is a disgrace is that there are negroes in Greece.

    • realist

WOW!!! Aryan, er Bob, just farted from his mouth!!!

  • truth

No, my friend you are the MORON! She started receiving criticism last month for tweet’s supporting the Golden Dawn party(an extreme right wing anti immigrant group) and thing nationalist in nature. Which include retweeting and posts praising Ilias Kasidiaris. The Hellenic Olympic Committee said Voula is “placed outside the Olympic team for statements contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement.” Let’s not forget that her own countries parliament make recommendations Hellenic Olympic Committee to the 3 times that she be removed form the team before this became public because they already knew what was to come when it went fully public.
Now she has a PR guy to tell her what to say. Wasn’t her initial statement to the negative responses “That’s how I am. I laugh. I am not a CD to get stuck!!! And if I make mistakes, I don’t press the replay! I press Play and move on!!!”

  • Voula

    I’m not a racist…I don’t even like NASCAR!!!

    • http://dadsbehavingdadly.com/ Hogan Hilling

The term “Olympic spirit” is an oft-referred to but perhaps vaguely-defined concept associated with the Olympic Games. Some media equate it with Pierre de Coubertin’s statement that “The important thing is not to win, but to take part”, and view athletes who try their best but finish last as epitomising the “Olympic spirit”.

      THE OLYMPIC CREED
Pierre de Coubertin got the idea for this phrase from a speech given by Bishop Ethelbert Talbot at a service for Olympic champions during the 1908 Olympic Games. The Olympic Creed reads:

“The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”

The creed and motto are meant to spur the athletes to embrace the Olympic spirit and perform to the best of their abilities.

The creed does not state anything about an athlete’s political view or comments. It’s about the performance and behavior on the field.

Even if we agree that she was wrong, did it really warrant banning her?

I AM AN AFRICAN IN GREECE AND DO NOT TAKE A RACIS OFENCE…..
I was asking the same thing… why do they chaw me and not my husband…… so… she made a not so frendly joke…. so what…. what about all the things that has been said about the Greeks in the last few months….. please everybody…. STOP TURNING EVERYTHING INTO RACISM….. give the girl a chance… she deserve it……

      • Galer Dolan

Thank you. I feel the same.

        • Galer Dolan

I’m grateful for people like you who will give a person the benefit of the doubt.

      • Pat Mercer

You probably an uneducated african if you don’t understand that she was racist.
Being african is not a ticket for you to say that she is not racist.
A lot of african people has been brain watched so much by white people, they don’t even know what’s racist anymore.
You are one of them, no wonder you’re living in Greece. Cause if you had more respect for yourself you would probably go live somewhere they actually respect african more.

        • http://WWW.NOCIRC.ORG Bob Fairlane

You’re racist if you think “african” means exclusively black. hahaha.

  • Galer Dolan

    Mr. Rigney,
In the third paragraph of your post you do finally tell us what Voula Papachristou actually tweeted. And here’s what’s obvious to anyone who doesn’t need to parrot popular opinion or imagine racism where there isn’t any……
    Papachristou’s tweet isn’t racist.

At most—even this is a stretch—the tweet indicates Papachristou is slightly xenophobic. She probably isn’t thrilled to have a large number of immigrants coming into Greece and competing with Greeks for jobs, housing and other resources. By March of 1990, West Germans were as unwelcoming to the influx of East Germans as Papachristou apparently is to Greece’s influx of Africans.

Please give me just one example of the natives of a country being delighted by a deluge of immigrants.

Today’s lesson : Only olympic athletes who hail from countries in which no one in his (or her) right mind would choose to live are permitted to get away with tweets that may indicate slight xenophobia.
Today’s other lesson : The Greek Olympic Committee reserves the right to punish athletes for the thought crime of right wing sympathies with false accusations of racism.

    • Mario Sandez

You are completely right. In fact, she didn`t state that the fact that there are so many immigrants in Greece is something negative. Of course one could probably deduct it, also knowing she supports some right wing party, but she never said she hate immigrants or is unhappy with them in his country.

      • Galer Dolan

        Mario Sandez,
First let’s acknowledge that a person –who does not hate immigrants– might still view a certain great influx of them–or any great influx of them–as “something negative” for the citizens of his country. Then let’s acknowledge his view could be “right” (by which I mean : in line with reality).
How good or bad large numbers on incoming people would be for a country’s citizens depends on the answers to certain questions. Doesn’t it ? If I were Greek, I’d know my country was already in trouble if freely discussing those questions with other Greek citizens– on the right as well as the left–could cost me my career.
The questions I’d want to consider would be the following…….

        (1) Are the immigrants here legally ? ( This should matter because your country doesn’t remain your country for long after it ceases to matter. It becomes, instead, an area over which different tribes of people travel and fight. Then it becomes part of other countries, or some other country.)

        (2) Are the immigrants as respectful of the laws of my land as the citizens are. (No country needs more criminals.)

        (3) Do the immigrants support themselves and pay taxes ?

        (4) Do they strive to learn the history of my country, and to learn to speak and read our language ?

        (5) Do they strive to understand and respect–if not adopt–my country’s customs and traditions ?

        (6) Do the immigrants seem grateful to be allowed to be here ? (Personally, if I were an immigrant to Greece, I’d remain aware of this : For whatever reason, I dropped in on these people. They didn’t drag me to their country. Before I felt entitled to complain about being discriminated against or scrutinized, the answers to the first 5 questions I’ve listed would have been “yes” for not less than 10 years. As an immigrant, I’d also beware of socialists bearing gifts of manufactured outrage, on my behalf, over twitter comments that might convey a whiff of ethnic snobbishness. And I’d carefully weigh anyone’s political agenda with my long term interests in mind.

Most of all, as much as any member of a right wing party, as an immigrant I wouldn’t think the Greeks owed me the shelter of Greece. So I’d be–and act– grateful to be there. And I’d be determined to prove to the Greeks they inadvertently did themselves and their country a favor taking me in.)

        • Galer Dolan

Mr Sandez, In my third sentence I meant to write : ” large numbers of incoming …” Sorry.

        • Pat Mercer

It’s clear that you don’t know what you’re talking about and you are also an uneducated racist.
If you don’t understand already that this was an unaccepted racist comment then there is no point to even talk to you.
          Where are you living?
          What country?

          • http://WWW.NOCIRC.ORG Bob Fairlane

Libtards always like to say “uneducated racists”. But if you dumbasses haven’t learned yet that negroes are no good for Europe, YOU need to get an education. Anyway, lots of people accepted Voula’s “racist” comment and had a laugh.

  • Diinytg

Someone doesn’t want 90% of the country to be immigrants and live in squalid poverty. RACIST!!!

    • Galer Dolan

      I agree.
Is there any evidence that Dominicans would be pleased to have more Haitian immigrants ? No ? Well they certainly are lucky that no one can seriously claim their lack of enthusiasm about sharing their half of the island with a larger number of Haitians is due to their racism.

  • Alan Douglas

That joke is NOT racist. The people concerned and the mosquitoes are both from the same place.

It is immigrantist maybe, but so what.

    Alan Douglas

    • Pat Mercer

If this is the way you look at this, you’re even more racist than she is, you don’t even realize that, come to america and make this joke in my neighbourhood, we’ll see what’s gonna happen, people will get upset and it won’t be good.
When you want to joke, joke with your family, your own race, not other races.

      • http://WWW.NOCIRC.ORG Bob Fairlane

        Coon Town hahahahaha

  • muki

I don’t care what way she wanted us to interpret it, I don’t know her personally so Ill quickily assume she’s either racist or just stupid. No one should back her up unless you kno her personally. If you’re African or black you should be offended. But don’t act surprised cuz racism does exist towards all races. Whether she’s racist or noti dont care, she brought this on herself nd she should kno better being a high class athlete.she fucked up bad, regardless of your race or gender u should realize that nd stop trying to over analyze the situationnnd recognize. THIS IS A DUMB PERSON.
